North Wilkesboro Speedway is now in the books and it will go down as one of the most dominant performances of Justin Bonsignore’s illustrious career. He may not have started from the pole, and he may not have led every lap, but he left only five cars on the lead lap and won by 6.473 seconds at the historic facility.

But more importantly, Bonsignore reclaimed the points lead as he looks for his fourth NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship in less than one week’s time at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia on Saturday night.

Bonsignore started fourth, but quickly drove to the front of the field, taking the lead for the first time on Lap 11. He lost the lead in the pits on Lap 32, but took it back for good just 10 laps later and led all the way to checkered flag from there.

Meanwhile, his main rival for the championship had the exact opposite day on Sunday.

Defending champion Ron Silk entered the day with a five-point lead over Bonsignore, but left North Wilkesboro trailing by 10.

Silk qualified sixth, ran as high as fifth, and then dropped like a rock through the field on the long green-flag run that decided the race. Silk dropped as far as 12th, but gained one spot back when Kyle Bonsignore spun coming to the checkered flag. Silk finished 11th, two laps down to Bonsignore.

Patrick Emerling, who was the hottest driver in the series until one week ago, finished fourth on Sunday and heads to Martinsville with an outside shot at the championship as he is now 24 points back of Bonsignore for the championship lead.

So now it all comes down to one night on Saturday at the one of the most historic and legendary short tracks in all of pavement racing at Martinsville Speedway.

Bonsignore was strong at Martinsville one year ago, finishing second to Ryan Preece who was in his own zip-code last year. If Bonsignore has that kind of day again, he’ll be celebrating his fourth championship and would join Mike Stefanik, Tony Hirschman, and Doug Coby as the only drivers to win four NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championships.
