Entry List: Stacked NASCAR Modified Tour Field Heads To Thompson Speedway
Entry List, event preview, and more for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.
With just two races left in 2023, all eyes turn to the Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in the northeastern corner of Connecticut for the penultimate race of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season on Sunday. Sunday’s race will be the 152nd at the historic 0.625-mile facility, and with that comes a stacked field of Modifieds.
Headlining every entry list this season and again for this weekend is this epic championship battle being waged by three-time champion Justin Bonsignore and 2011 champion Ron Silk.
Bonsignore scored his 13th victory at Thompson back in August, putting him into a tie for second on the all-time NWMT wins list at Thompson with the late Ted Christopher. Bonsignore is two wins shy of Mike Stefanik’s number for the most all-time at Thompson. Bonsignore has five victories so far this season, which has him just two points ahead of Silk with two races remaining.
But Silk is no pushover at Thompson either. The Norwalk, Connecticut native has visited victory lane on the frontstretch of Thompson Speedway five times throughout his career. Silk’s most recent win at Thompson came during the 2020 season. Silk has four wins so far this season.
Many eyes will be on a driver from Northampton, Pennsylvania too, but not that driver from Northampton. Young Austin Beers has turned plenty of heads this season. He’s currently third in points, 48 markers out of the lead. While fighting for the championship is pretty improbable at this point, Beers has proven himself with his six pole positions and two victories so far this season.
Even though he dropped out of full-time competition this year, Eric Goodale will be one to watch on Sunday. The Riverhead, New York driver rallied late to finish fourth last Saturday night at North Wilkesboro Speedway, and Thompson is one of his best race tracks. Goodale scored the victory in this race one year ago.
It’s been a rough season for Craig Lutz and the Danny Watts-owned No. 82 team, but going to Thompson usually cures many of Lutz’s ailments. Lutz is a two-time winner at Thompson, with half of his four career victories coming at “The Big T.” Lutz will be changing rides next season as Watts will be retiring from being a NWMT car owner, so a win would be extremely emotional for the entire team.
In total there are 26 drivers entered for Sunday’s World Series 150 presented by FloSports.com.
