The CARS Tour held a 125-lap showdown against Mother Nature on Saturday night at Altamahaw, North Carolina’s Ace Speedway, and when it was all said and done it was Landen Lewis celebrating in victory lane for the second time in his CARS Tour career.
Lewis held off Ace Speedway “ace” Ryan Millington on a restart with about 20 laps to go and drove off to the win by 1.745-seconds over Millington claiming his first win since last summer at Wake County Speedway. Millington finished second with Conner Jones, Lanie Buice, and Landon Huffman completing the top five.
But the big story coming out of Saturday’s race at Ace is how tight the points battle now is entering mid-May’s trip to North Wilkesboro Speedway with more than one quarter of the 15-race season now in the books.
Connor Hall entered the night with a nine-point gap over Kade Brown, and another 18 points back to Lewis in third. But Hall found himself involved in three different cautions throughout the night. He suffered a flat tire early, got turned around in the middle stages, and then ramped over the hood of Brandon Pierce with about 25 laps to go. Even through all of that, Hall still managed to finish 11th and score a valuable bonus point for leading a lap.
But even with that rebound, Lewis gained a ton of ground and tightened everything up at the top. Lewis now trails Hall by just four points unofficially, with Brown one point behind him in third. Landon Huffman has moved up to fourth in points, now unofficially 22 points back of Hall.
Mini Tyrrell, who looked to be a championship contender in the early races of the season and scored a win at Wake County, entered the night 29 points behind Hall in sixth in the standings. He will leave Ace Speedway unofficially eighth in points, 36 markers back now.
The zMAX CARS Tour now turns its attention to the historic North Wilkesboro Speedway on Friday, May 16 when the tour makes its national television debut. The event will air on both FloRacing and FOX Sports 1 that evening with the green flag expected at 8 p.m. ET. Fans who subscribe to FloRacing can watch every CARS Tour event with their subscription.
