The ASA/CRA Super Series and ASA Southern Super Series are headed to the legendary high banks of the Nashville Fairgrounds this weekend, and the entry list is made up of names you’d expect to see at a big Super Late Model race. Bubba Pollard, Cole Butcher, Matthew Craig and the likes will all be there. But one name stood out among the rest. Driving the No. 24 from Clovis, California, Jade Avedisian.
So is Jade Avedisian already making her first Super Late Model start? She’s only been racing on pavement for a handful of months after beginning the transition from open-wheel dirt racing to pavement Late Model racing late last summer.
Well, the answer is… maybe.
“We’re just going to go there tomorrow, Friday evening, and see how it goes,” Avedisian told FloRacing on Thursday. “I tested a Super for the first time a few weeks ago. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow and then decide on Saturday morning if I’ll run the Pro Late Model or I’ll run the Super. We’ll see.”
The 18-year-old driver has made a handful of Pro Late Model starts so far with a few wins in Carolina Pro Late Model Series competition and zMAX CARS Tour competition. Avedisian became the first woman to win a CARS Tour race back in March at New River All-American Speedway.
But while a Pro Late Model and Super Late Model are essentially the same, the horsepower difference (there’s nearly 200 horsepower more in a Super), made the cars drive very differently according to Avedisian.
“It was definitely way different,” she said. “I’d say the Super stuff is a lot more like the dirt side of things. I feel like it kind of felt a little bit more natural to me. So when the time is right for that, I’ll be ready.”
Whether or not that time comes on Saturday in Nashville, or the decision is made to run only the Pro Late Model, Avedisian said she’s content with how her adjustment to pavement racing has been going so far.
“I feel like I’m happy where I’m at right now,” Avedisian said. “Obviously, I always look for more. I always look back, even though we’re still at kind of the start of the season, I look back and go ‘Man, what could I have done better to win more races.’ But I’m happy with where I’ve started and where I am now. I feel like as a person I’ve matured so much this year, and I feel like on the race track that really shows as well. So I’m excited to come down to the start of winter and have a lot of experience and look back at this whole year and see how much I progressed in a short time. I’m happy with where I’m at right now, but every day I still think about what I could do better and how I could win more races.”
Winning more CARS Tour races, specifically, is something that Avedisian has on her mind. Her first win earlier this year came as a result of a disqualification to the driver ahead of her. Because of that, Avedisian didn’t get to climb out in front of the crowd or pop the champagne (but not drink it) with her Wilson Motorsports crew. Avedisian said she wants to win another one the right way, and soon.
“When I get to that point, and hopefully I do shortly, it’ll feel amazing,” said Avedisian. “Any time you can win a big race, and I feel like every CARS Tour race is a big race, I mean they’re going to North Wilkesboro in a couple of weeks and that’s going to be a really big race. I’m just going to put a lot of focus into it and how I can put myself in position to win, and then it’s just executing. I definitely want to win. My expectation is to win. Of course, it can play out a thousand ways, but if I keep putting myself in position it will work out.”
While Avedisian told FloRacing she doesn’t know her whole schedule for the rest of the year, she was able to confirm that she’ll be in competition with the CARS Tour at North Wilkesboro Speedway in the Pro Late Model on Thursday, May 14.
