The field for Saturday’s 150-lap showdown will be a who’s-who of Southern Modified racing, but with some additional NASCAR Cup Series flare thrown in as well.
We’ll start off with that NASCAR Cup Series flare, which comes in the form of new school and old school. Current NASCAR Cup Series driver for RFK Racing, Ryan Preece, will be behind the wheel of the Hughes Motorsports No. 14. Preece, the 2013 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, has won at Bowman Gray Stadium before. He led all 199 laps to take the win back in 2013 with the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.
The other driver with NASCAR Cup Series ties is the 2000 NASCAR Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer, Bobby Labonte. The Corpus Christie, Texas native made a handful of starts at Bowman Gray a couple of years ago, which is what kicked off his newfound love of Modified racing. Now, Labonte is a Southern Modified racing star and a multi-time winner with the SMART Tour. Labonte has five SMART wins and has finished top five in the season championship standings on three occasions.
Bowman Gray Stadium fans and Modified fans are certainly familiar with the next two names we’re going to highlight, as there are 23 track championships and nearly 200 total wins at Bowman Gray between the two of them alone.
We’re talking, of course, about Tim Brown and Burt Myers, two bitter rivals who have rewritten the history books of Southern Modified racing and Bowman Gray racing for the better part of the last two decades.
We’ll start with Brown, the Tobaccoville, North Carolina native. Brown is the all-time wins leader at Bowman Gray Stadium with 101 victories. He’s also a 146-time pole winner at Bowman Gray, and a 12-time track champion in the Modified division. And not only will Brown be piloting his famous No. 83 Modified on Saturday afternoon, he’ll also be running the Cook Out Clash in the NASCAR Cup Series on Saturday and Sunday for Rick Ware Racing, the team he works for full-time as a mechanic.
Not to be one-upped by his fierce rival, Burt Myers will also be doing double-duty this weekend. Myers will be running the No. 50 in the Clash for Team Amerivet, in addition to racing his iconic No. 1 Modified for all of his fans from the “Dirty South.” Myers, an 11-time track champion, has won 97 times in Modified competition at Bowman Gray.
Amazingly, even though Brown and Myers have won 23 championships, they’re not the only track champions on the entry list for this weekend’s Madhouse Classic. Joining them on the entry list are Danny Bohn, who won the 2014 title, and Brandon Ward, who claimed the championship in 2023.
The Cook Out Madhouse Classic will go green at 1:45 p.m. ET on Saturday, February 1. FloRacing, which has been the official home for all weekly events at Bowman Gray Stadium since 2022, will broadcast Saturday’s race. Fans can subscribe to FloRacing by clicking here.
