Another year has come and gone in the world of motorsports. 2024 was a year full of major storylines that rocked the racing world. From the loss of a legend to major mid-season ride swaps, the 2024 season was one that will not be forgotten. 

As the year comes to an end, we take a look at the most-viewed stories published on FloRacing in 2024. 

1. Dirt Track Legend Scott Bloomquist Killed In Plane Crash

Dirt track legend Scott Bloomquist was killed in a plane crash near his home in Tennessee on Friday, August 16. Bloomquist, a Dirt Late Model Hall of Famer, will go down as one of the greatest Dirt Late Model drivers of all-time with a resume that is nearly unmatched.

2. Drag Racing Star Lizzy Musi Passes Away After Battle With Cancer

Drag Racing star, Lizzy Musi passed away after a year-long battle with cancer surrounded by family in her own home according to a family statement. Musi was more than just a racer; she was a trailblazer and an inspiration. From a young age, she was drawn to drag racing, following in the footsteps of her legendary father.

3. Kyle Larson Responds To Comment About Sprint Car Team’s Finances

Kyle Larson didn't pull any punches when responding to a fan's comments about his Sprint Car team's finances. Larson, who was fresh off three Sprint Car victories in four nights, used his X (formerly Twitter) account in an attempt to clarify that the No. 57 Paul Silva-owned Sprint Car team is not operating on a limitless budget.

4. Hudson O’Neal Departs Rocket Chassis House Car Team

Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., left the Rocket Chassis house car team in March, shockingly ending his wildly successful run of just of over one season with the powerhouse Shinnston, W.Va.-based operation co-owned by Mark Richards and Steve Baker.

5. Kevin Harvick Inc. Announces Return to Full-Time Competition

Kevin Harvick and Kevin Harvick Inc. announced in February that the team would be returning to full-time Late Model competition with a mix of drivers in 2024. The team went on to compete in Late Model Stock Car, Super Late Model and Pro Late Model races throughout the season. 

6. Ricky Thornton Jr., SSI Motorsports Part Ways

Ricky Thornton Jr. and SSI Motorsports announced in July that they were ending their successful four-year run. The pairing won more than 60 races over four seasons including a $1 million season with 34 victories in 2023. 

7. John Force Racing Announces New Driver For Remainder Of Season

John Force was hospitalized following a fiery crash during the NHRA Virginia Nationals at Virginia Motorsports Park in June. In July, the team announced that Fast Jack Beckman was set to replace Force in the John Force Racing Peak Funny Car. 

8. Tyler Erb Announces Departure From Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series

Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, announced his plans to drop off the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series in May, ending five-plus years as a circuit regular and his Best Performance Motorsports team’s even longer run as a national tour stalwart.

9. Chase Johnson Racing Provides Update After Vicious Gold Cup Crash

Chase Johnson was injured In a vicious crash during the Gold Cup Race of Champions at Silver Dollar Speedway in August. In September, he spoke for the first time since the crash and issued a video message so supporters on his Facebook page.

Tony Stewart and Leah Pruett announced in June that the couple was expecting their first child in November. On November 17, the couple announced the birth of their son, Dominic James Stewart. 

11. Man Killed After Being Struck By Sprint Car At Jacksonville Speedway

The racing community was hit with tragic news on June 28 following the report that a man was struck by a race car and killed at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville, Illinois. A 65-year-old man, identified as Ralph A. Willhite of Jacksonville, was struck by a 410 Sprint Car that had lost control and entered the infield at a high rate of speed. 

12. Hudson O’Neal To Replace Ricky Thornton Jr. At SSI Motorsports

Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., announced in July that he would be returning for a second tour of duty with SSI Motorsports, taking over the seat left vacant after news that Ricky Thornton Jr. had been released as the team’s driver.

13. Is Erica Enders Going NHRA Top Fuel Drag Racing?

In July, Elite Motorsports owner Richard Freeman leaked plans for NHRA Pro Stock World Champion Erica Enders to go Top Fuel racing by confirming purchase of cars. The details of the jump were still very much in the early stages and nothing official was announced other than the intention to build a program. 

14. Ricky Thornton Jr. Announces New Ride For 2024 Season

Ricky Thornton Jr. announced his new driving home for the remainder of the 2024 season. Thornton, the reigning DirtonDirt.com Driver of the Year, joined forces with North Carolina-based Koehler Motorsports as the Chandler, Ariz., native continued his pursuit of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Castrol FloRacing Night in America championships.

15. Inside The Confrontation Between Ricky Thornton Jr. And Chris Madden

Heading into the World Finals finale at The Dirt Track at Charlotte, all eyes were on the anticipated World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series championship battle between Brandon Sheppard and Bobby Pierce. By night’s end, Sheppard vs. Pierce didn't match the drama — with Sheppard claiming the title comfortably — that developed between the race winner and runner-up.

16. Kubota High Limit Racing Announces 2025 Schedule

Following a successful first year as a national sprint car touring series, Kubota High Limit Racing announced a 61-race schedule for the 2025 season, including stops at 36 unique facilities across 20 states.

World of Outlaws officials issued a suspension and fine to Late Model driver Bobby Pierce for failing a tire test after competing in the World of Outlaws CASE Construction Equipment Late Model event on February 16 at Volusia Speedway Park.

18. An Update On McKenna Haase Following Violent Knoxville Nationals Crash

Sprint Car driver McKenna Haase was hospitalized at a Knoxville Hospital following a vicious crash during Friday's Knoxville Nationals Hard Knox event at Knoxville Raceway. Haase was competing in the first heat race of the evening when she was involved in an accident with Terry McCarl. The contact between the two drivers resulted in Haase hitting the turn one wall and flipping multiple times. 

19. Mark Richards Announces Driver Change For Rocket 1 House Car Team

In November, Mark Richards announced that Brandon Sheppard will return to the seat of the Rocket Chassis house car in 2025, taking the reins of an iconic machine that he drove to four World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series titles in a six-year span from 2017-22.

20. All Star Circuit Of Champions Sprint Car Series Returning In 2025

The All Star Circuit of Champions is back. The oldest winged sprint car series will return to action in 2025 with a full schedule, including Ohio Sprint Speedweek.

21. Brandon Overton Announces His New Team For 2025

Longhorn Chassis officially announced on November 6 a multi-year deal with driver Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., as Factory Team driver. In December, Overton announced his intentions to compete full-time on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series circuit in 2025.

22. The Mistake The Cooked Bobby Pierce’s Engine at Eldora Speedway

In the immediate aftermath of Bobby Pierce’s engine expiration while dominating Thursday’s 50-lap preliminary feature for Eldora Speedway’s Dream XXX, the 27-year-old Oakwood, Ill., driver had no idea what had gone wrong. His crew, unfortunately, couldn’t have been surprised that Pierce’s powerplant didn’t last the distance of the $25,000-to-win event.
