'Tis The Season At The Snowball Derby

After what was a rainy first day of the 2024 Snowball Derby at Five Flags Speedway, it looks like the Pensacola weather will play nice for the rest of the weekend in the Florida panhandle.

Temperatures were as cold as the upper 30's on Friday morning as the drivers entered their second practice session, preparing specifically for the Snowball Derby qualifying session on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. CT, which will be in similar temperatures as the morning.

NASCAR drivers Ty Majeski, Noah Gragson and Bubba Pollard were fighting against the cold in Thursday's practice sessions before things were shut down due to rain clouds that moved into the area and started dropping water on the track over the next few hours.

It wouldn't be until almost 9:00 p.m. ET before the sound of race cars and trucks being pushed to their limit would once again take over the sound waves at Five Flags Speedway. During the nearly seven hour delay, a fleet of more than five trucks with top-shelf dryers worked slowly and suredly away at getting the track back in working condition for high velocity racing as soon as possible.

Drying vehicles from Owasso Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway contributed to the efforts.

Unfortunately, spotty clouds kept bringing more bouts of rain and delayed things further.

It was worth the effort, however, as local fans and viewers got to see three local division races finally take place with the pro trucks, craftsmans, and pure stock cars hitting the Five Flags Speedway. That was only after annotated group qualifying sessions.

Kaden Honeycutt ended up winning his first of four races that he participated in this weekend in Pensacola after Steven Davis was disqualified. Davis failed the technical inspection after the race.

The forecast for race day on Sunday, however, is set to be sunny and in the 70s—which has created quite the challenge for the drivers as they strategize and attempt to gather data in practices to see how they might run in the race.

Friday Forecast:

  • High: 53
  • Low: 36
  • Precipitation: Sunny, 0%

Saturday Forecast:

  • High: 61
  • Low: 45
  • Precipitation: Partly Cloudy, 0%

Sunday Forecast:

  • High: 69
  • Low: 63
  • Precipitation: Mostly Cloudy, 4%

What Kind Of Cars Race In The Snowball Derby?

The Snowball Derby is a 300-lap race contested by Super Late Models.

Without getting too technical, Super Late Models are the Late Models most frequently raced around North America and are raced at other big events, such as the Winchester 400, All-American 400, Oxford 250 and the Battle at Berlin.

Pro Late Models also race during Snowball Derby week, in the Snowflake 100, which traditional is contested on Saturday night each year, while the Snowball Derby takes place Sunday.

Pro Late Models are nearly identical to Super Late Models, except under the hood, as they have less horsepower.

Who Is Racing In The 2024 Snowball Derby?

NASCAR Cup Series driver, and winner of the 51st Snowball Derby, Noah Gragson, is returning to Five Flags in search of his second Tom Dawson Trophy.

Derek Thorn of Bakersfield, California, is back again in search of his second victory (2022), while Ty Majeski of Seymour, Wisconsin, is looking to join rarified air by winning his third Snowball Derby and second in a row (2020, 2023).
