What Is The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby is a 300-lap Super Late Model race, but more importantly, it’s the biggest short track race contested on pavement each year. And this year, it’s the biggest and richest one yet. For the first time ever, the Snowball Derby will pay a massive $50,000 check to the race winner, in addition to the historic Tom Dawson Trophy.
The Super Late Model race is also the culmination of four days of racing at Five Flags Speedway. The event also includes the biggest Pro Late Model race of the year, the Snowflake 100, on Saturday night, which will also be broadcast live on FloRacing.
Where Is The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby is held each year at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. Five Flags Speedway is a fast, but extremely abrasive half-mile oval. In addition to being the home of the Snowball Derby, Five Flags Speedway is also home to the Blizzard Series for Super Late Models, the Allen Turner Pro Late Models, and the “Sunshine State 200” for the ASA STARS National Tour.
When Is The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby begins on December 5th and ends with the 300-lap Super Late Model race on Sunday, December 8th, though official Snowball Derby festivities on FloRacing will begin on Tuesday, December 2nd with the annual Snowball Derby Kickoff Party show live on FloRacing.
The qualifying draw will take place on Wednesday night, with practice and local division racing on Thursday, December 5th. Qualifying for the 57th Annual Snowball Derby will take place on Friday, December 6th, and the Snowflake 100 will be held on Saturday, December 7th.
How To Watch The Snowball Derby?
This year, for the first time ever, the Snowball Derby will be broadcast on FloRacing and is available to all FloRacing subscribers. While in the past the Snowball Derby was only available as a pay-per-view event, this year that is not the case. All current FloRacing monthly and annual subscribers already have access to the Snowball Derby. All non-subscribers can become FloRacing subscribers by clicking here.
Fans can watch on their SmartTVs, mobile phones or tablets, as well as computers on FloRacing.com. The FloSports app is available on Roku, FireTV, Samsung, LG, Google Play Store and Apple Store.

When Did The Snowball Derby Begin?
The first Snowball Derby was held in 1968, 15 years after Five Flags Speedway opened in 1953. The first race was won by Wayne Niedecken, and it was just 100 laps in distance at the time. The Snowball Derby was the brainchild of track owner/promoter, Tom Dawson, who had just purchased the track earlier in the year in 1968. In the years since, the trophy that is awarded to the winner of the Snowball Derby has become known as the “Tom Dawson Trophy.”
What Kind of Cars Race In The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby is a 300-lap race contested by Super Late Models. Without getting too technical, Super Late Models are the Late Models most frequently raced around North America and are raced at other big events such as the Winchester 400, All-American 400, Oxford 250, and the Battle at Berlin.
Pro Late Models also race during Snowball Derby week in the Snowflake 100, contested on Saturday night of Derby week each year. Pro Late Models are nearly identical to Super Late Models in every way except under the hood as they have less horsepower than the Super Late Models.
Who Is Racing In The Snowball Derby?
The Snowball Derby attracts attention from racers all over North America, from the weekly Super Late Model ranks, all the way up to the NASCAR Cup Series. With an entry list consisting of more than 50 cars, it’s impossible to spotlight every driver, so we’ll just rattle off a few names here.
NASCAR Cup Series driver and winner of the 51st Snowball Derby, Noah Gragson, is returning to Five Flags in search of his second Tom Dawson Trophy. Derek Thorn of Bakersfield, California, is also back again in search of his second victory, while Seymour, Wisconsin’s Ty Majeski is looking to join rarified air by winning his third Snowball Derby and second in a row.
Meanwhile, Super Late Model superstars Bubba Pollard of Senoia, Georgia, and rival Stephen Nasse of Pinellas Park, Florida are both on the entry list once again in search of their first victory on the discipline’s biggest race.
The entire entry list can be seen below.
