Why Jason Myers Was Disqualified At Bowman Gray Stadium And His Reaction

When the first of two twin 25-lap features ended on Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium, it appeared that Jason Myers had just scored his 39th career victory at the race track dubbed “The Madhouse.” Myers held off Tim Brown on the race track, but a tire infraction in post-race technical inspection saw Myers lose credit for the win, and instead it was Brown who claimed another checkered flag for a record-extending 98th time.

According to Bowman Gray Stadium’s head technical inspector Jerry Reeves, the tires that were on Myers’ No. 4 Modified during the race were not the tires that were chosen as his race tires earlier in the evening.

“I discovered that the markings that I put on the tires when they come off the truck were done in a different color than what I used tonight,” explained Reeves. “Therefore the tire had been changed or altered at some point, as far as my markings on the tire.”

A clearly frustrated Myers contested that point at the end of the night on Saturday, saying that everything his team did was done in front of the eyes of the officials.

“They told me I had the wrong tires on the car and that they’re not the ones that came out of the truck and out of the impound when they marked them,” explained Myers. “They watched me put them on the car. They didn’t say anything before qualifying. They didn’t say anything before the race started. They finished the race and then came to me and said they wanted my tires. So then they take my tires and say, ‘Nah, we don’t like it.’ And I’m sitting there confused because I have no idea what they’re talking about.”

Reeves further explained to FloRacing that he and his officials did check every car’s tires at multiple times throughout the night.

“When the tires come off the truck, as soon as they select them, I mark them,” said Reeves. “I use different color pens and markings and I put the car number on them. Prior to each race I walk through, checking my marks to make sure they’re the right colors. Tonight, I saw something a little suspicious prior to the first race. That made my decision after the race was over to look at tires.”

Myers said the disqualification made it feel like the track was trying to single him out and make an example out of him.

“It’s just a bad deal. I don’t want to say I was singled out, but that’s what it feels like,” Myers said. “It’s just not a fair playing field sometimes over here. It’s just one of them deals. It’s Bowman Gray stuff. The whole crowd down here saw what happened, and the story that made it to the tower was completely fabricated. But, I’m on the stubby end of it. I don’t know.”

The disqualification took a would-be 39th career victory for Myers and turned it into a record-extending 98th career win for Tim Brown instead. The win was also the fourth of the season for Brown, though he was less than enthusiastic to receive a win in that fashion.

“It’s very fortunate for our race team to win our 98th race and fourth of the year, but it’s unfortunate to win it in these circumstances,” said Brown. “For several reasons. It’s the 98th win and we didn’t get to celebrate out there (in victory lane). It’s taking it from Jason. It’s unfortunate for him and his team and his sponsors and his fans, but it’s fortunate for my fans and sponsors and for me. Any time you can win is good. I just hate that there’s controversy.”

Even though Myers was clearly left frustrated and confused by the disqualification, Myers said he’ll be back at Bowman Gray Stadium for the next race on July 8, which will be a 100-lap showdown for the Modifieds.

“Everyone was here, and they saw me win,” said Myers. “They can take it out of the book all they want to, but they aren’t coming to take the trophy, and they aren’t going to take away what I just did out there tonight. We’ll be back next week and see if we can’t give it to them again.”
