New Smyrna Speedway Cancels Florida Governor's Cup Due To Hurricane Ian
The 2022 Florida Governor's Cup 200 has been canceled due to damages that New Smyrna Speedway sustained during Hurricane Ian
New Smyrna Speedway track officials have announced that the remainder of the 2022 racing calendar, including the Florida Governor’s Cup 200 scheduled for November 12, has been canceled due to Hurricane Ian.
The half-mile oval received extensive damage and flooding from the storm that hit two weeks ago. Hurricane Ian hit the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach areas as a Category 2 storm.
New Smyrna Beach received the second-highest rainfall totals in the area, receiving more than 19 inches of rain. Track officials said that the flooding caused the most damage to the facility. Officials said that the water seeped under the racing surface and that “the underlayment of the track is not structurally sound.”
New Smyrna Speedway’s next race is currently scheduled for January 7, 2023. The World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing will take place February 10-18.
