NASCAR handed out penalties related to Saturday’s crash-marred finish to the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Martinsville Speedway. Sammy Smith, Taylor Gray, and Jeb Burton all received penalties stemming from the multi-car crash triggered by Smith in the final corner.
Smith, driver of the No. 8 for JR Motorsports, was penalized 50 driver points as well as fined $25,000.
“We want to see really hard racing and door-to-door racing, and contact is certainly a part of the sport and part of the sport at Martinsville Speedway,” said Eric Peterson, Xfinity Series Managing Director. “We felt like after looking at all the facts, all the video, the team audio, SMT data and all the tools, we have to work with and review an incident like that. Unfortunately, what Sammy did was over the line and something that we feel like we had to react to. We would prefer to leave it in the driver’s hands but in this case, it wasn’t really a racing move and we reacted to it as such.”

Gray and Burton were each fined $5,000 for what is being deemed as a “violation of infield care center conduct.”
“Taylor and Jeb were in the care center post-race and there was some behavior that NASCAR officials felt stepped over the line as far as interrupting a medical situation.” said Mike Forde, NASCAR’s Managing Director of Racing Communications on the “Hauler Talk” podcast. “The care center is almost an on-site hospital, so the drivers and any competitor that enters that area, there should be a sense of decorum there.”
The incident that triggered all of this took place in turn three and four on the final lap of Saturday’s 250-lap race. Smith slammed into the back of Gray entering the corner, sending Gray spinning from the lead. Smith was then hit by his teammate, Justin Allgaier, which opened the door for Austin Hill to sneak by and take the win. A massive crash happened on the frontstretch behind all of this.
The points penalty for Smith drops him from sixth to 13th in the points standings. He now sits 128 points out of the lead, which is occupied by his teammate Allgaier and ironically trails Gray by just one point.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series is back in action this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET from South Carolina's Darlington Raceway.
