After a few weeks off to digest everything that went down at the season opener, the CARS Tour Late Model Stock Cars are back in action this Saturday night at the smallest track the Tour heads to all season long, the quarter-mile bullring of Wake County Speedway in Raleigh, North Carolina.
CARS Tour officials just released the entry list for this weekend’s 125-lap showdown, which will see 29 cars vying for 26 starting spots.
Headlining the entry list is the defending winner of this race, and that is Landen Lewis. The Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina native won this race driving the second car for Kevin Harvick Inc. in a part-time effort last season, but now this year he is the lone full-time driver out of the KHI stables in Concord, North Carolina. Lewis capitalized on some of the late-race mayhem that played out to score his first and so far only CARS Tour Late Model Stock Car victory.
Lewis is joined on the entry list by one other driver as a former winner at Wake County Speedway. That driver is the 2016 CARS Tour champion, Deac McCaskill. The Raleigh native hasn’t found CARS Tour victory lane since the end of the 2023 season when he went to victory lane at South Boston Speedway. McCaskill won twice that season, with his other win coming in the opener that year at Southern National Motorsports Park. The veteran went to victory lane at Wake County in 2021 after leading 99 laps that night. But since then, McCaskill finished 20th in 2023, and 19th out of 19 cars in 2024.
One of the drivers that had a strong showing in last year’s race at Wake County was Richmond, Virginia native Mason Bailey. Bailey led 40 laps in August last year, which was the second-most laps anyone led in that race, before fading near the end to finish seventh. Bailey is back this year looking to repeat his strong performance, but hopefully get a better finish out of it than last year.
If Mini Tyrrell can have the type of run he had last year, a trip to Wake County this weekend might be just what the doctor ordered after his disappointing season opener earlier this month. Tyrrell suffered heavy damage in the early-race crash, but amazingly only lost one lap to repair his No. 81. Tyrrell limped to a 21st-place finish with a radiator that was literally held onto the race car with a bungie cord. All that said, last year Tyrrell finished fourth in this race, which was one of his seven top-five finishes in 2024.
The driver that finished right behind him last year was Ryan Millington, who was also caught up in that early-race crash at New River All-American Speedway earlier this month. However, Millington wasn’t held back by his damage and managed to rally to finish fifth at New River. Wake County has proved to be a good track for Millington, even though he’s yet to pick up a CARS Tour victory there.
