It’s that time of the week where things start to be bittersweet in Tulsa - bitter that the end is drawing near, sweet that the glorious Golden Driller is coming closer.
Friday’s fifth and final preliminary of the week goes tonight with 87 tentative entries on the list - meaning once again, the potential is there for a 10-heat night followed by two D-Mains, two C-Mains, four Qualifiers, two B-Mains, and the last 30-lap preliminary A-Main of the week with the final two lock-in spots available.

After waiting all week long, the two-time and defending Chili Bowl champions - Logan Seavey in the Swindell/Curb/Bertrand, Victory Fuel No. 39 - finally get their turn tonight. The Sutter, CA native is trying to win his third-straight on Friday, fourth overall prelim, and make it back to his seventh Chili Bowl Championship A-Main as he hopes to join his car owner and crew chief Kevin Swindell (2010-13) and Christopher Bell (2017-19) in the three-peat club.
The biggest change to Friday night this year comes in the form of Justin Grant. The driver is no surprise, he’s recently won five of six prelim nights on Friday, but the car is. After a four-year run with RMS Racing, JG made the decision to move across the aisle and join Chad Boat’s potent CB Industries lineup in the NOS Energy Drink No. 87. The Ione, CA native looked stout in practice on Sunday and the Race of Champions on Monday, now he’ll try to join teammate Daison Pursley in Saturday’s Championship A-Main.
Four days after Kyle Larson’s sensational opening night win on Monday, Paul Silva and the gang are back to action tonight with the Silva Motorsports, NOS Energy Drink No. 23C. They’ve added “Sunshine” Tyler Courtney to their stable, a former preliminary night winner in 2017 and a six-time Chili Bowl Championship A-Main starter. It’ll be a tough act to follow in the footsteps of Larson, but Sunny is ready to roll in Friday’s prelim for the first time in his career.
The talk of town this week has been that team at the front of the building with all those cars - no, no, not KKM, but Matt Wood Racing. Entering tonight, three of their four cars to be raced already are locked-in for the Championship A-Main with Shane Golobic, Landon Brooks, and Ryan Bernal all set for Saturday night. Tonight, the final prelim sees MWR send Daryn Pittman in to battle, who is no stranger to competing for prelim wins and locking-in in Tulsa.

As far as Keith Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports goes, Keith and Pete are bringing three cars to the Expo in the final prelim of the week - confirming a new all-time record of 16 entries this week for the team. Tonight’s trio of KKM contenders includes Oklahoma’s Ryan Timms, Pennsylvania’s Gavin Miller, and New Zealand’s Michael Pickens - all three being expected to compete up front.
Back to CB Industries, this is the one prelim of the week where Chad Boat will have to deal with two cars competing in a single night. Along with JG’s NOS Energy Drink No. 87, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is not to be confused in the NOS Energy Drink No. 86X. The dirt racing graduate turned NASCAR Cup Series regular is hoping to return to his ninth Chili Bowl Championship A-Main come Saturday night.
Outside of the superteams, there are plenty of other worthy contenders to watch tonight such as a guy like Andrew Felker in his family-owned No. 11A operation. Last year on Friday, we saw Felker briefly take the lead while battling up front all race long and ultimately finishing P3, then transferring through the B-Main to make his third Chili Bowl Championship A-Main.
Parked adjacent to Felker’s No. 11A is the Trifecta Motorsports No. 5U driven by Michael Faccinto. The Californian took this combination to his third Chili Bowl Championship A-Main last year and is favored by many to return for a fourth A-Main come Saturday night with how strong the #5U has been in the building.
If you look deeper, you’ll find plenty more names to keep your eye on tonight with studs like Chase McDermand, Ace McCarthy, Jason McDougal, Ronnie Gardner, TJ Smith, Kyle Jones, Hayden Reinbold, and many more in the field.
Of 16 rookies set to run on Friday, one name stands out a touch - that being two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, Kyle Busch. The Las Vegas, NV native will be making his Chili Bowl Nationals debut in a KBM, Lucas Oil, FloRacing No. 51 with five-time Golden Driller winning crew chief “Big Al” Scroggins on the wrenches.
Busch isn’t the only star from top-tier American Motorsports tonight, either, with IndyCar’s Santino Ferrucci set to compete for USAC Champion team, Abacus Racing.
