Chili Bowl officials are cracking down on tire doping this week inside the SageNet Center in Tulsa. Officials and competitors alike have voiced concerns about the issue, making tire doping the hottest topic of the week.
Tire doping isn’t a topic anyone actually wants to talk about, but yet the topic is so hot it’s nearly on fire.

For those that aren’t familiar with the term, “tire doping,” also known as tire soaking, is the process of putting chemicals into the tire rubber to soften the tire. A softer tire typically provides more grip, and now that the tire used at the Chili Bowl Nationals is a harder tire than it used to be a few years ago, that lost grip is sorely missed.
On Wednesday, Chili Bowl Nationals Technical Director Cody Cordell actually kicked someone out of the building after they were caught tire doping. And then on Thursday, Cordell addressed the topic at the driver’s meeting.
“Listen, if you think it’s undetectable, I’m not going to sit here and babysit all of you,” Cordell said. “I can assure you, it is detectable. Think what you want. Play the game. But if you get caught, from here on out, you will not be back next year. And it will be known, and be made a scene.”
One driver has been particularly outspoken about it, and even went as far as blaming the tire doping on why the racing in the 55-lap A-Main has been bad the last few years causing this year’s race to be shortened to 40 laps.
“If you have to cheat to win, you’re chicken shit, basically,” said 2022 Chili Bowl champion, Tanner Thorson. “Steven Hahn and Gravel (Brad Chandler) in the infield have taken a lot of shit from me over the last five years over the race track being terrible. I think a lot of that just comes down to tire doping, honestly. The RD-12 wasn’t the tire to dope up because it was already soft, and once we got onto these hard tires the track got way worse. So I give them the benefit of the doubt now.
“You saw about halfway through the Shootout the track started rubbering up and getting goofy. Then they started popping guys for tires and next thing you know the track goes slick and being racy. Cody is doing an awesome job. He knows what to look for. He’s got a lot of different people, including myself, that can kind of allow him to know what I know. Hat’s off to him and the Chili Bowl for allowing him to do that. I give Cody a lot of crap, but he’s doing the right thing.”
Cordell and the Chili Bowl staff have been taking tire samples from cars each night throughout the Chili Bowl and the Tulsa Shootout earlier this month and sending them to Blue Ridge Race Lab in Lenoir, North Carolina. On Thursday, Chili Bowl officials posted to social media that all samples taken from cars competing on Monday, January 13 conformed to the benchmark, meaning that nothing out of the ordinary was found.
But due to the time it takes to ship the samples and test the samples, Cordell said that all samples taken from Thursday through to the end of the event on Saturday night will not be able to be tested during the event and therefore results will not be ready during the event either. As a result, Cordell levied a threat to all the teams.
“So here’s the deal. I cannot get the results back before Saturday night for tonight, tomorrow, or Saturday,” Cordell explained. “So what we’re going to do is I am going to get those results back next week some time. If anybody fails a tire test the rest of the week, you will not race next year. And that’s it. Plain and simple. The guys from Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will be penalized this year. The guys from the end of the week can’t be penalized this year, so you will be penalized next year.”
Results from samples taken on Tuesday and Wednesday are still pending results and will be announced by Chili Bowl Nationals officials once they are received.
