Kyle Larson Wins Brickyard 400; Teases Return To Indy 500 In 2025
Kyle Larson finally kissed the bricks at Indianapolis and then teased a potential second try at the Memorial Day Double in 2025.
The month of May did not turn out how Kyle Larson envisioned it would when he announced plans to do the Memorial Day double at the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600. But Larson finally got to celebrate a meaningful Indianapolis Motor Speedway experience on Sunday evening after he scored his first victory in the Brickyard 400.
Larson took the checkered flag under caution on Sunday evening to win in NASCAR’s return to the oval at IMS after a three-year stint on the road course. Sunday’s race was also the 30th anniversary of Brickyard 400, so it’s only fitting that Larson, a Hendrick Motorsports driver, went to victory lane 30 years after Jeff Gordon put Hendrick Motorsports in Indianapolis Motor Speedway victory lane after the first Brickyard 400.
But that might not be the biggest news that came out of Sunday’s race for Larson. Instead, it might be what he said after the race while standing on the famous yard of bricks when he teased a potential return to the Indianapolis 500 in 2025.

“I love you Indiana fans, and I know you guys love me too,” Larson said in his interview with NBC’s Marty Snider on the frontstretch. “So how about we come back next May and try to kiss these bricks in the IndyCar.”
Larson was then asked if that meant he was definitely returning to try the Memorial Day Double a second time. At that point, Larson backed off just a little bit.
“I’d love to. We’re working on it. I hope we can announce something soon and see you guys all next May. I wish we could have got to do both and run the 600 because we had a phenomenal papaya orange car for that race, too.”
Larson was hoping to become the first driver since Kurt Busch in 2014 to attempt the Memorial Day Double, but his attempt was thwarted by rain. A storm delayed the start of the Indianapolis 500 by multiple hours causing Larson to miss the start of the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte, North Carolina.
After finishing 18th in Indianapolis due to a pit road penalty, Larson flew to Charlotte with plans to get in his Hendrick Motorsports No. 5 machine shortly after halfway. But the same rain storm that delayed the start in Indy struck Charlotte and caused the Coca-Cola 600 to be called shortly after Larson arrived on the property.
When Larson initially announced plans to race the 2024 Indianapolis 500 in January of 2023, it was announced as a two-year deal with the Arrow-McLaren team. But after everything that happened this year, his 2025 plans were thrown into question.
So will Larson return to the Indianapolis 500 again in 2025? We’ll just have to wait and see, but it seems like all signs are pointing that way.
