Kyle Larson's return to the Chili Bowl Nationals in 2024 got off to a disastrous start when Larson flipped in his heat race on Thursday at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Larson entered the Chili Bowl on Tuesday and signed up to race with Keith Kunz Motorsports. The NASCAR superstar and two-time Chili Bowl champion was planning to race at the Wild West Shootout on Saturday in New Mexico and fly back to Tulsa to race in the A-Main at the Chili Bowl if he finishes in the top two on Thursday.

After flipping just moments into his first heat race, that may put his qualifying for the A-Main race in jeopardy. But Larson finished fifth in the heat race and will still have a chance to qualify for Saturday.

Larson will start second in a C-Main and will need to finish fourth or better to advance to a B-Main. From there, he'll need to finish top four in a B-Main to qualify for Thursday's main event. It doesn't end there. Once he's in Thursday's A-Main, he will need to finish first or second to guarantee himself a starting spot in Saturday's Chili Bowl A-Main.

Why Is It Called The Chili Bowl?

The Chili Bowl Nationals were started back in 1987 by Lanny Edwards and Emmett Hahn. The two promoters partnered with “The Chili Bowl Company" owned by the Berryhill family. Edwards and Hahn decided to name the event after the company.

“My father bought into a restaurant on 11th street (in Tulsa),” said Bob Berryhill. “And it was called the Chili Bowl.”

Eventually, the Berryhill family took the Original Chili Bowl restaurant and turned it into a company that sold their chili in grocery stores.
