Driller Season Begins At The Tulsa Shootout

It's that time of year when the racing world begins to operate on "Tulsa Time." The 39th running of the Tulsa Shootout, an event known as the Mecca of Micros, is set to take place December 27-31 at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Here's everything you need to know heading into the biggest Micro Sprint race of the year.

What Is The Tulsa Shootout?

The Tulsa Shootout is an annual Micro Sprint event featuring six divisions of Micro Sprints: Jr. Sprints, Restricted A-Class, Winged A-Class, Stock Non-Wing, Non-Wing Outlaw and Winged Outlaw.

Winners of each division receive a coveted Golden Driller trophy, the same trophy that is given to the winner of the prestigious Chili Bowl Nationals two weeks later.

Where Is The Tulsa Shootout Held?

The Tulsa Shootout is held at the SageNet Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The race track itself is a quarter-mile clay oval that is built inside the building approximately two weeks prior to the event.

This year, event officials began the track build by dumping clay inside the building on December 12.

Tulsa Shootout Format

With over 1,600 entries for this year's event, narrowing down the field to 24 feature starters in each of the six divisions is no easy task.

Step 1: The Pill Draw - When signing in for the event, drivers draw for their starting position in one of what could be as many as 30 heat races depending on the official car count.

Step 2: Heat Races - Drivers will earn points based on their finishing position and how many positions they gain or lose during heat races. Following heat races, the top 112 in passing points are sent to qualifiers, while the rest of the field are sent to D-Mains or C-Mains to begin a potential run through the alphabet soup.

The points chart used for Tulsa Shootout heat races and qualifiers.

Step 3: Eight Qualifiers - Each qualifier will feature a top-four inversion prior to the green flag. This gives the top 32 point-getters from heat races a chance to earn more points by passing more cars. During the qualifiers, drivers will once again be racing for points. Only the top 16 in combined points (heats + qualifier) will advance to the main event. 17th-112th in points will be split into B-Mains.

Step 4: The top two finishers in D-Mains will transfer to C-Mains. The two finishers in C-Mains will transfer to B-Mains. The top two finishers in the B-Mains will transfer to a last chance qualifier. The top eight from the last chance qualifier will transfer into each division's main event.

Step 5: We have a field of 24 cars in each division that will race for a Golden Driller trophy.

Are Brexton Busch And Kyle Busch Racing In The Tulsa Shootout?

Yes, Brexton Busch and Kyle Busch will both be competing in the Tulsa Shootout again this December. The event has become a family affair in year's past with bragging rights on the line for father and son.

Brexton Busch will compete in the Jr. Sprint and Restricted A-Class divisions, while Kyle Busch will compete in Winged Outlaw, Non-Wing Outlaw and Stock Non-Wing.

Is Hailie Deegan Racing In The Tulsa Shootout?

Yes, Hailie Deegan will return to the Tulsa Shootout this year after missing the event last year. Deegan, who will race in the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2024, will drive the No. 38D Micro Sprint in the Non-Wing Outlaw, Winged A-Class and Stock Non-Wing divisions.
