Virginia Triple Crown Kicks Off With Saturday's South Boston 200
The 2023 Virginia Triple Crown gets underway at South Boston Speedway Saturday with the Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200.
The Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 at South Boston Speedway, one of the biggest races of the entire Late Model Stock Car season, is finally upon us. In just a few days the eyes of the LMSC world will be trained on South Boston, Virginia as the Virginia Triple Crown finally gets under way.
The 2022 edition of this race was arguably the most exciting one yet. Corey Heim held off Jacob Borst in a photo finish that saw both drivers cross the finish line sideways right before wrecking hard into the inside wall in turn one. Nobody who was there last year will soon forget what they saw, but they’re all hoping they’ll see something just as spectacular this Saturday night.
As of Tuesday afternoon, South Boston Speedway has received entries from 37 of the best Late Model Stock Car teams and drivers who are set to race for the $10,000 check.
So far, the 2023 season at South Boston Speedway has been dominated by two drivers: multi-time track champion, Peyton Sellers, and Zebulon, North Carolina’s Carter Langley. Sellers and Langley have 11 wins between them this season. Sellers has scored five to Langley’s six, but Sellers leads the track points standings by just five points.
Both drivers of course are entered in Saturday’s South Boston 200. Sellers, the defending Virginia Triple Crown champion, will be going for his third win in this race, while Langley will be chasing his first.
Sitting third in track points currently is the man that barely missed out on the victory in this race one year ago, Jacob Borst. The Elon, North Carolina driver has nine top five finishes and 11 top 10 finishes, but he is still chasing his first victory of the 2023 season at South Boston. Redemption in Saturday’s Thunder Road Harley-Davidson would be extra sweet for Borst.
Saturday’s showdown at South Boston Speedway is the second big LMSC race of the week this week as the CARS Tour will be racing for 125 laps on Wednesday night at Caraway Speedway. Currently, there 11 drivers planning on doing double-duty between CARS Tour and South Boston this week.
The 11 double-duty drivers include CARS Tour points leader and defending champion Carson Kvapil, Brenden Queen, Brandon Pierce, Landon Pembelton, Bobby McCarty, Landon Huffman, 2022 Hampton Heat winner Jared Fryar, Logan Clark, Lanie Buice, Ronnie Bassett Jr., and reigning NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series national champion, Layne Riggs.
Riggs was caught up in a crash in this race last year, which was the only blemish on his stat-line during his track championship and national championship season. Riggs will be doing the double this week with two different teams. He will be racing for Kevin Harvick Inc. at Caraway in the CARS Tour race and at South Boston he’ll be in his familiar family-owned No. 99 machine.
One driver mentioned in that group that deserves to be spotlighted is Bobby McCarty. McCarty is a three-time CARS Tour champion, the most recent CARS Tour winner, and is the winner of the 2021 Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200. McCarty and Sellers are the only previous winners of this race currently entered.
Saturday’s Thunder Road Harley-Davidson 200 will be the fifth race on the card with feature racing set to begin at 7 p.m. ET. Race fans can watch the entire night’s festivities from South Boston Speedway live on FloRacing with a FloRacing subscription. Fans can subcribe by clicking here.
