Erik Jones Claims Meaningful Money In The Bank 150 Win At Berlin Raceway
NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones scored a meaningful Money in the Bank 150 win Wednesday night at Berlin Raceway.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones scored a meaningful victory in the Money in the Bank 150 Wednesday night at Berlin Raceway. The Legacy Motor Club driver claimed the win at his home track seven years to the day that his father, Dave, passed away.
"This was big for a lot of reason. It's been a long time since I won a race here," Jones began. "The last one I won was an emotional one. I lost my dad that week, and this was the day in 2016 that he actually passed away. This is a tough day always, but it felt good to be at the track and it felt good to be racing. Man, I bet he's smiling right now."
Jones started from the pole position and led the field to green following an invert after qualifying. He jumped out to the early lead and led the way for the first 29 laps before Kyle Crump took command on lap 30.
Crump showed the way for the majority of the race until the final caution of the race with 30 laps remaining. After the leaders pitted for tires, Jones restarted to the outside of Crump and powered to the lead. From there, he methodically navigated lapped traffic and pulled away to a 0.645-second win over Crump.
"I finally hit a good (restart) there at the end and Kyle spun his tires a little bit, and we were able to get the lead," Jones said. "I knew coming to green, I said I need to get the lead here or at least try to race him hard for it. It worked out good and no cautions at the end was fine by me. It's a pretty cool day."
For Jones, the day was cool for a variety reasons. In addition to scoring the win for his dad, the win had special meaning because the No. 4 Super Late Model is a car that he both owns and drives.
"This is my car. The guys over at Port City Racecars, Gary Crooks, Chris Gabehart and the guys there, have put together a really nice piece for me. We struggled at Wilkesboro, but I think we more than made up for it here. It feel pretty special, this one ranks pretty high on the list."
Crump held on to finish second after leading 91 laps of the 150-lap race. Bubba Pollard charged from his 18th starting position to finish third. Local driver Andrew Scheid and young gun Gio Ruggiero completed the top five.
