More Than 30 Cars Headed To Berlin Raceway For Money In The Bank

Michigan’s Berlin Raceway is about to have the eyes of the Super Late Model world fixed upon it as some of the discipline’s best drivers and teams head to the challenging Michigan half-mile oval for the 2023 edition of the “Money in the Bank 150.” With the race less than a week out, the provisional entry list is already more than 30 cars deep.

Headlining the entry list is the man who won the most recent big money race at Berlin Raceway, even though his is a name that still is unfamiliar to many. That driver is Michigan’s Evan Shotko. Shotko won the track championship last season, and won the Motor Mountain Masters race at Jennerstown Speedway last year. But the biggest win of his season and his life came in August when he powered to victory lane in the Battle at Berlin, the biggest race of the season at Berlin Raceway.

Shotko drove away from fellow Berlin Raceway native Brian Campbell, who finished second in last year’s Battle at Berlin. Campbell is a multi-time track champion at Berlin, and a winner of every big race to be held there. While 2022 was a down season for Campbell, he already has a victory this season. In fact, he’s the most recent winner at Berlin Raceway, so he has momentum on his side as he rolls in to place another big deposit.

Another local driver that the invaders will have to contend with is Andrew Scheid. Scheid has finished no worse than third in three Super Late Model races at Berlin so far this season with one win under his belt as well.

When it comes to the out-of-towners looking to score a big win, the invasion is led by Senoia, Georgia’s Bubba Pollard. Pollard won this race in 2017. In four starts he has yet to finish worse than fourth with finishes of first, second, fourth, and second in that order. The local drivers can try to say that the road to Berlin’s victory lane goes through them, but it really goes through Pollard.

This year’s Money in the Bank isn’t as heavy on the NASCAR stars as previous years, but there’s still a couple who will be in competition next week and both of them call Michigan their home.

The first one we’ll highlight is Byron, Michigan’s Erik Jones. Jones is a three-time NASCAR Cup Series winner, a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champion, and a Battle at Berlin winner as well. His return to Berlin in last year’s Money in the Bank didn’t go so well with Jones scoring just a 10th-place finish, but he had a podium run in August at last year’s Battle.

The other NASCAR driver entered next week is Portage, Michigan’s Carson Hocevar. Hocevar is a two-time winner of the Money in the Bank. He scored back-to-back victories in 2020 and 2021. Hocevar claimed his first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series win earlier this season, and he will be making his NASCAR Cup Series debut at World Wide Technologies Raceway in Illinois this weekend right before heading to Berlin.

Gio Ruggiero may not be a NASCAR driver just yet, but he is fresh off beating one last week. Ruggiero scored a massive win at Hickory Motor Speedway during Coca-Cola 600 week in North Carolina when he beat NASCAR Cup Series driver William Byron to the checkered flag by inches in a dramatic photo finish. Ruggiero is driving for powerhouse Donnie Wilson Motorsports and should be another contender for the victory at Berlin.
