“Don’t call it a comeback. I’ve been here for years,” the legendary 20th century poet, LL Cool J, once remarked. However, comebacks are in the fabric of all assets of auto racing, from drivers charging through the field, the return of prestigious events and the yeoman’s work of a crew thrashing to repair a car in the nick of time. Here are the top-6 “comebacks” from the 2020 USAC National season.
3. Larson Undenied
Oct 28, 2020
We were witnesses to the amazingness that was Kyle Larson in the year 2020 on eight different occasions in USAC competition. Larson reached the lead of August’s Hoosier Hundred just 25 laps into the race after starting 22nd. He was relegated to his position near the back after changing a right rear tire during the pre-race, which only hindered his run through the pack momentarily.
It was more of the same back in June during Indiana Midget Week at Gas City I-69 Speedway as well. Appearing to struggle to a 3rd place finish in the semi, doubts were cast on whether Larson could make his way to the head of the field from his 14th starting spot. One thing we learned this year on the dirt tracks of America: never doubt Kyle Larson.
