Before next week’s 37th annual Lucas Oil Tulsa Shootout takes the spotlight on FloRacing, we wanted to take you back in time and revisit last year’s epic running of the “Mecca of Micros.”

For the third time in the last five years, a trio of first-time winners got to bask in Golden Driller glory. It was also only the fourth time in the last decade that a single driver walked away with a Golden Driller for both hands, that being Brian Carber with the performance of the night.

STOCK NON-WING

The first 30-lapper of the night saw Carber make it three-straight SNW wins for the east coast and for Hyper Racing with Kyle Spence (2019) and Alex Bright (2020) preceding him.

Carber (Pipersville, Penn.) led all 30 laps after bolting by front row starters TJ Smith and Tyler Courtney to lead the opening circuit from P3. It was anything but an easy route, though, as Smith and eventual runner-up Christopher Bell made the #41C work for it.

Bell, the ninth starter, came awfully close in the closing stages, but couldn’t muster a big enough run to overtake Carber, who didn’t know it at the time but was only beginning a magical night inside the Expo.

Stock Non-Wing (Top 10): 1. 41C-Brian Carber (3); 2. 21X-Christopher Bell (9); 3. 14-TJ Smith (1); 4. 23M-Kenny Miller III (5); 5. 15D-Mason Daugherty (4); 6. 33C-Chase Cabre (12); 7. 56-Jace Park (7); 8. 44P-Aiden Purdue (16); 9. 21K-Thomas Kunsman (23); 10. 4X-Tyler Courtney (2).

OUTLAW NON-WING

The most dominating performance of the night was arguably the most special as Claremore, Okla. native Kris Carroll laid an absolute beatdown on the field for his first-career Golden Driller.

After a phenomenal 9th-to-1st Qualifier sent him from 69th to 1st in passing points, Carroll took full advantage of the pole position and checked out with a 3.448-second margin of victory.

It was a moment of redemption for the local Port City Raceway champion, who scored the Outlaw Non-Wing title only one year after missing it by one position to fellow Okie, Brady Bacon.

Following Carroll was an intriguing top-five as Carber’s incredible night continued with a P2 bid from 7th, 12-year-old Brent Crews made waves with a stunning podium effort, KKM’s Daison Pursley beat the boards down during a 15th-to-4th charge, and Alex Bright finished in fifth.

Outlaw Non-Wing (Top 10): 1. 3K-Kris Carroll (1); 2. 41C-Brian Carber (7); 3. 11X-Brent Crews (9); 4. 71K-Daison Pursley (15); 5. 20-Alex Bright (3); 6. 21X-Christopher Bell (24); 7. 21K-Thomas Kunsman (4); 8. 14R-Jake Nail (2); 9. 41-Logan Rumsey (6); 10. 59-Kyle Spence (8).

A-CLASS

Perhaps the best race of the night came when the wings first came out as Brian Carber extended the record to a whopping 14 different champions in the last 14 years of A-Class action.

Again, it was Carber leading from start-to-finish in this one, but it never lacked any excitement at the front of the field. On two separate occasions there was contact for the lead as Carber insisted on defending his top spot from Jason McDougal on Lap 27 and then Tyler Courtney on the final lap.

Ultimately, the gap between Carber and Courtney at the checkered flag was a mere 0.187-seconds.

A second score put Carber in the company of Donnie Ray Crawford (2007) and Jason McDougal (2018) as the only three drivers to sweep the Stock classes in a single night at the Tulsa Shootout.

A-Class (Top 10): 1. 41C-Brian Carber (1); 2. X-Tyler Courtney (12); 3. 73-Jason McDougal (2); 4. 81-Frank Flud (6); 5. 5H-Jake Hagopian (5); 6. 21X-Christopher Bell (3); 7. 888-Hank Davis (4); 8. 71K-Daison Pursley (7); 9. 21T-Caeden Steele (11); 10. 20-Alex Bright (21).

WINGED OUTLAW

The big dance offered the biggest drama as the 55-lap main event concluded the 36th annual event last year.

Polesitter Joe B. Miller, in pursuit of his second Golden Driller, commanded the first 42 laps with ease, but controversy was right around the corner. Jonathan Beason pulled alongside Joe B. on the lap 43 restart and took the lead, but only eight laps later it was called back with a two-spot penalty for Beason.

That brought his Ten-J teammate Mitchel Moles to the catbird seat with only four laps remaining. Beason was able to get back to second by Miller but couldn’t catch Moles as the checkered flag dropped and the chatter on the restart began.

The win was Ten-J’s third in three years at the Tulsa Shootout and gave Californians six of the last 11 Winged Outlaw Golden Drillers.

Winged Outlaw (Top 10): 1. 13-Mitchel Moles (8); 2. 10B-Jonathan Beason (2); 3. 4X-Tyler Courtney (16); 4. 1J-Cody Key (6); 5. 151-Joe B. Miller (1); 6. 51T-Kevin Thomas Jr. (4); 7. 23M-Kenny Miller III (7); 8. 21H-Brady Bacon (13); 9. 1C-Brenham Crouch (12); 10. 73S-Jadon Rogers (5).
