Brad Sweet, Daryn Pittman Sweep Weekend For Kasey Kahne Racing

Brad Sweet and Daryn Pittman were victorious over the weekend to give Kasey Kahne Racing a sweep of both World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series events.

Sweet won at Black Hills Speedway in South Dakota on Friday and Pittman picked up the win at Big Sky Speedway in Montana on Friday. The duo has combined to win 11 races this season on the Outlaws tour.

The series continues their West Coast Swing this coming holiday weekend with a trio of races in the state of Washington.

Master of Billings

Daryn Pittman won for the second consecutive year at Big Sky Speedway in Billings, MT, and the third time overall in his career. He also was triumphant at the three-eighths-mile in 2005. The 2013 series champion used a strong restart on the 17thlap to take the lead from Jacob Allen. Pittman fended off a couple of subsequent slide jobs from Jacob Allen en route to scoring his sixth win of the season.

Using his experience

Brad Sweet credited the experience he has on restarts in his World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series career, with helping him take the lead from Jacob Allen with seven laps remaining at Black Hills Speedway. Sweet took the lead and then was able to fight off an attempt by Allen to retake the lead on the same lap. Sweet then pulled away to win by over a full second. The win was Sweet’s fifth of the season and first since he claimed the biggest win of his career in the 58thAnnual Knoxville Nationals. Sweet followed that up with a fourth-place effort at Big Sky Speedway.

Continuing to knock on the door

Jacob Allen won the dash and led laps at both Black Hills Speedway and Big Sky Speedway as he continues to close in on his first career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win. At Big Sky Speedway, Allen led the first 16 laps of the 35-lap main event. He ended up finishing second to former series champion Daryn Pittman. The native of Hanover, PA, led 18 laps at Black Hills Speedway, before Brad Sweet got by him on a late-race restart. Allen ultimately finished fifth at Black Hills Speedway. He now has nine top-five finishes this season and is among the top-10 in points.

Career night

Dominic Scelzi matched his best-career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series finish at Black Hills Speedway, coming home third. The Californian started seventh and worked his way up to third by just the fifth lap. Scelzi ran as high as second as chases that elusive first Outlaws win.

Late race charge

Donny Schatz used a strong restart with seven laps remaining at Black Hills Speedway to gain several spots en route to a runner-up finish. Schatz, who started 10th, fell back to 11thin the early going and ran 10thfor about the first half of the race. On the late-race restart, he charged from ninth into the top-three in the matter of a few laps. At Big Sky Speedway, Schatz found himself on the podium in the third position.

Hard Charger

Greg Wilson lined up 17that Black Hills Speedway and steadily worked his way forward to finish sixth, which earned him the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Like Donny Schatz, Wilson used a strong restart with seven laps remaining to get by several cars.

Five in a row

Kraig Kinser finished fifth at Big Sky Speedway to earn his fourth top-five finish of the season. The third-generation driver now has five straight top-10 finishes at the three-eighths-mile, dating back to 2005.

Two top-fives

Logan Schuchart finished fourth, which coupled with his teammate Jacob Allen’s fifth-place run, put both Shark Racing cars in the top-five at Black Hills Speedway. The team has had double top-five a number of times this season as they continue to build consistency and contend for wins. At Black Hills Speedway the team came up just one spot short of repeating the feat, as Allen crossed the line second, with Schuchart in sixth.

A new track record

Donny Schatz was fastest in time trials at Big Sky Speedway, setting a new track record in the process. The quick time honor marked the first time all season that the nine-time and defending series champion has been fastest in qualifying. A total of 16 of the 22 drivers who took qualifying laps broke the old track record, which had stood since 2005.

Back to front

Brent Marks and Dominic Scelzi both worked their way back through the field at Big Sky Speedway, after being involved in cautions, to earn top-10 finishes. Marks, who had a right rear tire explode ended up finishing ninth, after restarting at the tail of the field on the 16thlap. Scelzi spun, following a restart on that same lap, and worked his way back forward to finish 10th.

A couple of new tracks

Rico Abreu made his debut at both Black Hills Speedway and Big Sky Speedway. The Californian started 15thand finished 13thon both nights. Abreu will continue to race with the Outlaws through the remainder of the West Coast Swing.

Points update

Donny Schatz’s lead over Brad Sweet sits at 236 points. David Gravel continues to ride third, with Daryn Pittman fourth and Shane Stewart fifth. Logan Schuchart has moved into sole possession of the sixth spot, with Sheldon Haudenschild seventh, Ian Madsen is eighth and Brent Marks ninth. With his pair of top-five finishes, Jacob Allen moved into the 10thspot in points, which marked the first time in his career that he has been among the top-10 in the World of Outlaws standings.
