Tony Stewart Racing Announces Move Away From Ford Performance Engines
The 10-time World of Outlaws champion will no longer use Ford Performance engines during World of Outlaws points-paying races.
Donny Schatz and his Tony Stewart Racing team made a shocking announcement on Friday afternoon when he took to social media to let the Sprint Car world know that he will no longer be using a Ford Performance engine under the hood of his No. 15 Sprint Car at World of Outlaws points-paying events beginning immediately.
Schatz wrote, “For more than nine years, TSR has worked collaboratively with Ford Performance and Shaver Specialty Racing Engines on the development of the FPS410 engine. While that development will continue, TSR will take a step back from running Ford engines during points-paying races beginning tonight at Lawton Speedway.”

The 10-time World of Outlaws champion has been the primary driver in helping develop the FPS410 engine for more than five years now, about half the time that the FPS410 itself has been in development. The winner of 318 WoO races has won 22 races with the FPS410, but has yet to add his 11th championship.
The 47-year-old driver will go back to piloting Chevrolet powerplants built by Ron Shaver, Schatz’s longtime engine builder.
Shaver was also involved in the development of the FPS410, originally serving as an advisor before becoming the lead engine builder.
The development of the FPS410 changed many things surrounding Schatz and his TSR team. His longtime crew chief Ricky Warner moved away from that role and into a research and development role within Ford Performance. Car chief Steve “Scuba” Swenson took over as crew chief until the beginning of this season when Todd Devnich took over Swenson’s role. Shaver moved into an advisory role with Ford Performance while Late Model engine builder Andy Durham took the lead on the development of the FPS410 until Shaver was put back on point of the project before the start of the 2021 season.
For a time it was said that the main issue Schatz was facing with the FPS410 was that it output too much horsepower, which affected the driveability of Schatz’s No. 15, especially while in traffic. Back in the 2021 season, Shaver was having to find a way to de-tune the engine to give Schatz the feel he was used to.
But for now, none of that matters as Schatz will no longer drive a car powered by the FPS410 engine as he tries to chase an 11th World of Outlaws championship, which would be his first since 2018. Schatz currently sits sixth in the points standings, 200 markers back of David Gravel for the points lead. Schatz has zero wins on the season after 12 races.
The next race for the World of Outlaws is tonight at Lawton Speedway in Oklahoma.
