West Alabama is headed to the Division II Playoffs. Erskine is looking to end a seven-game losing streak. Here’s what to know and how to watch.

As the 2024 college football season winds down, some teams are fighting for conference championships, others are eyeing playoff spots and most are hoping to finish strong but already are looking ahead to next season.

West Alabama is one of the programs headed to the postseason, and the Tigers (8-1, 4-1) will get a final tune-up Saturday at home against struggling Erskine (1-7, 0-5).

West Alabama will welcome the Flying Fleet to Tiger Stadium in Livingston, Alabama, for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

In the latest Division II regional rankings, which are what’s used to determine the 28 playoff teams, West Alabama landed at No. 3 in the second of the four super regions. Ahead of the Tigers on the 10-team Super Region Two list are Valdosta State and Wingate.

West Alabama and Valdosta State were scheduled for a Sept. 28 battle that could’ve had title implications in the Gulf South Conference, but the game was canceled due to Hurricane Helene.

Six weeks later, VSU is undefeated (9-0, 5-0), ranked No. 1 in the latest American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches Poll and preparing for a matchup with West Florida that will determine this year’s GSC champion.

If UWF wins, the Argonauts take the championship based on win percentage for the first outright title (third overall) in program history. If Valdosta State wins, the Blazers would be back-to-back champions, and it would mark the first undefeated title run in the GSC since VSU did it in 2019.

A conference loss to Delta State on Oct. 19 ultimately eliminated West Alabama from the GSC race.

For Erskine, the season started strong but quickly got out of hand. 

The Flying Fleet opened the year with a 52-0 win over St. Andrews and then lost seven consecutive games, including a 73-0 rout by Valdosta on Sept. 21. 

Erskine did get a long break after that loss due to the hurricane and a natural lull in the schedule, but they were not able to get things back on track when play resumed Oct. 19.

With the final game of the season now here, Erskine sits at the bottom of the GSC standings at 0-5, with Mississippi College one spot higher at 1-5.
