Chase Johnson Racing Provides Update After Vicious Gold Cup Crash
An update on Chase Johnson after Saturday's vicious accident at Silver Dollar Speedway's Gold Cup Race of Champions.
After Saturday’s vicious accident at Silver Dollar Speedway’s Gold Cup Race of Champions on the Kubota High Limit Racing tour, Chase Johnson of Penngrove, Calif., is “stable and recovering” at UC Davis Medical Center’s Intensive Care Unit with a breathing tube, per an update on the 28-year-old’s Facebook page Monday afternoon.
The update on Chase Johnson Racing’s Facebook page also included that he underwent a nine-hour surgery to repair fractures in his C4, C5 and C6 vertebrae.
“They removed pieces of bone that broke off, repaired the damaged areas with a spinal fusion, and stabilized his neck using plates and screws,” the update on Johnson’s Facebook page continued, which added that Johnson “still has a T10 and T11 fracture.”
Johnson and his supporters “are hopeful that his breathing tube will be removed, which will allow him to talk.”
“We are so thankful for all of the support, prayers, and wishes,” the update added. “We will do our best to update on behalf of chases wishes.
The Californian was running seventh during Saturday’s 40-lap, $100,070-to-win Gold Cup finale when on lap 13 he was involved in a vicious accident in which he needed to be extracted from his No. 24 Sprint Car. From there, Johnson was helicoptered to UC Davis Medical Center where he’s been on the mend since.
Johnson made his High Limit Racing debut over the weekend at the Chico, Calif., bullring, where he finished third behind Corey Day and Spencer Bayston on Thursday’s prelim night. Johnson has 20 starts in 410 Sprint Car competition this year with one victory July 27 at Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway on NARC’s King of the West Racing Series.
