NHRA Funny Car Champion Ron Capps Finishes 10th In SRX Debut
NHRA Funny Car World Champion Ron Capps became the first NHRA driver in history to compete in SRX at Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway.
Three-time NHRA Funny Car World Champion Ron Capps started his double-duty weekend on the dirt track racing his NAPA Auto Parts Toyota GR Supra at the SRX (Superstar Racing Experience) event at Tony Stewart’s Eldora Speedway on Thursday. Capps battled in the top five early in the race before spinning and making contact with the outside wall, relegating him to a 10th-place finish.
Capps made his debut in the series alongside the star studded line up including Tony Stewart, Bobby Lamonte, Ryan Newman, Ken Schrader, Hailie Deegan, Marco Andretti, Brad Keselowski, Matt Kenseth, Chase Briscoe, Austin Dillon and Tony Kanaan.
While he is no stranger to dirt racing, this is the first time Capps has been invited to the all-star type event. With his start in tonight’s race, Capps became the first NHRA driver in the history of SRX to join the ranks of the best circle track drivers in the world after decades of straight line NHRA Drag Racing.
“This is an incredible opportunity,” Capps said. “There’s a lot of good drivers out here [in the NHRA], so it was definitely a shock to be invited, [and] it was very cool. The SRX Series has generated so much attention this year, and as the days get closer, I’m getting more and more nervous. It’s going to be a lot different from what I normally do, and I’ve got a lot of things stacked against me. We’re going to see how we can hold and see if we can’t make NHRA nation proud [on Thursday].”
Fellow NHRA racer and NASCAR legend, Tony Stewart dominated most of the race and took the checkered flag. Capps held his own through the 75 lap race and hung on the lead lap until 16 laps to go when Capps made contact with the wall and ended his hopes of a historic double-up weekend.
