First Look At 2023 Chili Bowl Qualifying Night Rosters
First Look At 2023 Chili Bowl Qualifying Night Rosters
Take a look at the newly released qualifying night rosters for the 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals.
The Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals gave us all one last Christmas gift as they released the first look at the rosters for each qualifying night for the 37th running of the biggest event in Midget racing late Sunday night.
While these nightly rosters are subject to change all the way up until each race day, we wanted to take a quick glance at how the 355 drivers currently entered are being broken down across five nights of heart-pounding racing inside the SageNet Center at Expo Square.
We’ll start with Monday’s Cummins Qualifying Night, and if you’re a NASCAR fan you’ll immediately notice that Chase Briscoe and Alex Bowman are both currently slated to race on this night. Bowman told FloRacing that he likes to go on Monday night to be the “test car” for his three car team.
Going a little bit further down the list you’ll find Monday’s headlining driver: Bixby, Oklahoma’s Cannon McIntosh. McIntosh won on Cummins Qualifying Night in 2021, and has finished now lower than fourth in the two Saturday A-Mains that he has started. McIntosh failed to make the Saturday A-Main in 2022, so you know he’ll be pressing hard to get back to where he feels he belongs.
Also running on Monday night is Jerry Coons Jr., who is amazingly still searching for his first Golden Driller trophy. Coons has made 18 Saturday A-Main starts, with a best finish of fourth on three occasions. Coons has not started Saturday’s main event since 2017 when his run of 14 years in a row came to an end.
One of the many other big name drivers doing battle on Monday night is the man known as “Big Daddy” Chris Windom. Windom has made nine Saturday A-Main starts dating back to 2007. Windom has also failed to make the A-Main on eight occasions, but he’s started the 55-lap race three years in a row now. Windom’s best finish is a sixth-place run in 2021.
All total there are 70 drivers scheduled to compete on Monday’s Cummins Qualifying Night.
Next up is Tuesday’s Warren CAT Qualifying Night, and on this night we have a past Chili Bowl champion competing in Watertown, New York’s Tim McCreadie. Even though McCreadie is best known for his career in bigger cars like Big Block Modifieds and Dirt Late Models, McCreadie has had a pretty stout Chili Bowl career. McCreadie won the race in his second attempt back in 2006. McCreadie has made the A-Main six times and hasn’t finished worse than ninth in any of those starts. Unfortunately for McCreadie, the last time he started the A-Main came back in 2016.
Another name that jumps out at you right away is that of Michael “Buddy” Kofoid. Even though he’s only attempting just his fourth Chili Bowl, Kofoid has already established himself as one of the favorites heading into this year’s race. Kofoid is fresh off a fourth-place run in 2022.
Tuesday night will also see one of the best feel-good stories in recent years in Daison Pursley’s return to the Chili Bowl. Pursley of course missed the 2022 event after a massive crash in November of 2021 that resulted in a fracture of the C4 and C5 vertebrae. Even though he couldn’t race, Pursley still came to the 2022 Chili Bowl and received a standing ovation. Pursley returned to racing in August, and won in a Midget for the first time since his crash on September 4th.
Warren CAT Qualifying Night also has plenty of girl power in the field with Jade Avedesian, Kaylee Bryson, Taylor Ferns, Gray Leadbetter and Mariah Ede all running on Tuesday night. Avedesian won two Xtreme Outlaw Midget races in 2022 at Jacksonville Speedway and I-44 Speedway in 2022. Bryson finished seventh in USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship points in 2022 with 15 top-10 finishes, five top-five runs, and she scored the best finish in USAC history for a woman with a second-place run at Gas City I-69 Speedway in September. Meanwhile, Ferns is the highest finishing woman in USAC Silver Crow history with a third-place run at the Carb Night Classic and again at Winchester Speedway in 2022.
In total, 74 drivers are currently scheduled to compete during Tuesday’s Warren CAT Qualifying Night action.
Moving on to Wednesday night’s Smiley’s Racing Products Qualifying Night, a night that features multiple past champions and some of the biggest names the Chili Bowl has to offer.
We’ll start off with the two past champions in Wednesday’s field, and those drivers have seven Golden Drillers between them. Five-time champion Sammy Swindell and two-time champion Rico Abreu are both in competition on Wednesday night. Swindell has made 25 A-Main starts and has scored a top 10 finish in 17 of them, but he has failed to make the field the last two years. Abreu, meanwhile, has made 10 A-Main starts, including a current run of nine years in a row. In addition to his two victories in 2015 and 2016, Abreu finished second in 2018 and third in 2022.
Fan-favorite Thomas “T-Mez” Meseraull will take to the track on Wednesday night. T-Mez has made the A-Main nine times including each of the last three years. His best finish was an eighth-place run in 2016.
Wednesday night will also see the first woman to win a national Midget race compete. Taylor Reimer of Bixby, Oklahoma was deemed the winner of the Xtreme Outlaw Midget Series race at North Carolina’s Millbridge Speedway back in May after original winner Cannon McIntosh was disqualified. Reimer backed that up with a podium run just days later at Lake Ozark Speedway in POWRi competition.
Wednesday night currently will see 74 drivers in action.
Thursday’s JCT Qualifying Night is the penultimate night for qualifying action at the Chili Bowl and it also features two past champions, one of whom is the defending Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals champion, California’s Tanner Thorson.
Thorson has made eight consecutive Chili Bowl A-Main starts dating back to 2015. He had finished fourth on three occasions and third in 2021 before finally breaking through to take home his first Driller last year. Thorson is looking to become just the fifth driver to win the Chili Bowl in back to back seasons. If he pulls that off this year he will join Kevin Swindell, Rico Abreu, Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson in that exclusive club.
The other past Chili Bowl champion competing on JCT Qualifying Night is “The Demon” Damion Gardner. Gardner scored his lone Driller back in 2008. Since then he’s finished on the podium just one other time when he scored a third-place run in 2015. Gardner has not made the A-Main since he finished 10th in 2017.
California’s Tanner Carrick will be one to watch on Thursday night. Carrick scored the qualifying night win on Monday night in 2022, which catapulted him to a fifth-place finish in Saturday’s A-Main. 2022 currently stands as Carrick’s only A-Main start, giving him plenty to build from.
C.J. Leary will be competing for Alex Bowman Racing on Thursday night, following a strong run in 2022. Leary finished third on Thursday night last year and used that run to score a seventh-place finish in Saturday’s A-Main.
A pair of record holders will also be in competition on Thursday night. JJ Yeley and Jason McDougal currently share the record for moving through the most features of the Alphabet Soup. Yeley and McDougal have both transferred through five features, the longest runs of anybody in the history of the Chili Bowl. McDougal went from the I-Main to the D-Main in 2021 before his run came to an end after contact with Ryan Bernal. 16 years earlier, Yeley went from the F-Main all the way through to a third-place finish in the A-Main in 2004.
Currently, a total of 76 drivers are scheduled to compete on JCT Qualifying Night on Thursday.
The final preliminary night of the week comes on Friday during Hard Rock Casino Qualifying Night.
Headlining Friday’s action is the defending winner of that night’s action, Justin Grant. Grant has won his qualifying night feature five of the last six years. Grant also won the VIROC in 2022, holding off a strong charge from Kyle Larson. Unfortunately, Grant’s strong week didn’t result in a strong finish in Saturday’s A-Main. He left Tulsa with a 16th-place finish, which is plenty of fuel for Grant heading into 2023.
Another competitor that many would expect to be strong on Friday night is Logan Seavey. Seavey is once again driving for Kevin Swindell and looking for a rebound in 2023 after a disappointing showing in 2022 saw them fail to qualify for the A-Main. That snapped a run of four-straight A-Main starts for Seavey, two with Keith Kunz Motorsports, and two for Swindell. Seavey’s best finish came in 2020 when he finished in fourth.
Some other big names running on Friday night include 2013 World of Outlaws Sprint Car champion Daryn Pittman, IndyCar racer Santino Ferrucci, and fourth-place finisher in 2014 Alex Bright.
Friday’s Hard Rock Casino Qualifying Night currently will see 61 drivers in action. Friday’s roster is intentionally lower than the other nights in case any driver has issues in Sunday’s practice sessions and needs to change their qualifying night.
The 37th Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals takes place January 9-14 at the SageNet Center at Expo Square in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Race fans can catch every single night of racing from the Chili Bowl live on FloRacing.
