Zack VanderBeek had the 25-lap feature in hand at Fairmont (Minnesota) Raceway until a broken fan blade on lap 14 sent him to the pits and handed the lead to Ryan Gustin. The Reaper said “thank you,” and led the remaining 11 laps en route to his 90th career USMTS victory.
Flat tires robbed several of an opportunity to win including Tyler Wolff on lap eight.
Wolff did not let the setback keep him at bay for long. In the final 18 laps, he drove higher through the turns than anyone. He charged through the field and passed Stormy Scott for fourth on the final lap.
Rookie of the Year contender RC Whitwell finished second—his first top-five in the past 11 races.
Points’ leader Jason Hughes rounded out the podium.
The last-lap pass by Wolff relegated Scott to fifth, causing him to lose a few more points in the championship battle. Even so, Scott’s charge from 15th after qualifying through the B-Main was an impressive outing.
