For years, Billy Decker has been one of the top dogs in the Super DIRTcar Series. On Saturday night (Oct. 12), he jumped back on his throne.

Despite starting 14th, Decker maneuvered his way through the field in the Salute to the Troops 150 at Oswego Speedway. It wasn’t until a lap 136 restart that Decker was able to capture the lead, passing Erick Rudolph through turns 1 and 2.

Though that was a short-lived green flag stint, it set up Decker vs. Rudolph on another restart, only for the caution to fly again. On a green-white-checkered finish, Decker was able to hold off the field and collect an additional $20,000.

“I learned what I needed to do on the restart from Larry [Wight] a couple laps earlier,” Decker said in an article by SuperDirtWeek.com. “It feels good to be here, I have to thank Gypsum Racing and the entire LJL Racing team.

The win was Decker’s seventh career 358-modified victory during NAPA Super Dirt Week. However, it was his first such triumph since 2011.

Rudolph finished the race second, while Larry Wight rounded out the podium. Tim Fuller and Mat Williamson filled out the top five. 21 cars finished on the lead lap, and one of the biggest surprises of the event was polesitter Jimmy Phelps dropping back to 19th at the conclusion of the race.

Earlier in the day on Saturday, Steve Bernier was victorious in the opening Last Chance Showdown race. Lance Willix II led early, but faded to second by the checkered flag. Alex Therrien, Kyle Dingwall and Mike Bowman rounded out the top five and qualified for the Salute to the Troops 150. Come the main event, Bernier raced to 10th, the highest finisher among the transfers.

The lineup for Sunday’s Billy Whittaker 200 is set with Decker on the pole. Matt Sherppard, Williamson, Fuller and Anthony Perrego fill positions two through five. It should be quite the show, with the likes of Stewart Friesen, who raced on Saturday at Talladega Superspeedway in the Gander Outdoors Truck Series, coming from 31st position.

In the two other events at Oswego Speedway on Sunday, Tony Markou will begin the Wilkins RV 50 from the pole, with Kevin Root leading the way in the Sportsman division’s Chevrolet Performance 75.
