5 Reasons To Watch The Mega 100 At 'America's Baddest Bullring'

Mother Nature may not have cooperated earlier this month, but that’s not enough to keep the stars of the American Modified Series away from the possibility of a record-breaking payday as the fourth annual Mega 100 Weekend gets underway Thursday.

Over the past several weeks, track officials and sponsors at Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, WV, have sweetened the pot for AMS invaders, UMP DIRTcar Modified visitors, and hungry local regulars alike, with nearly $70,000 up for grabs between three nights of racing, including the Let It Ride 55 on Friday and the Mega 100 on Saturday—which are both streaming LIVE on FloRacing.

Simply put, the East Coast has never seen a Modified event this big.

Here are five reasons to watch this weekend as the best in Open Wheel Modified racing return to “America’s Baddest Bullring.”

5. Get ready for a huge draw from across the region and beyond.

AMS points leader Trent Young, Mike McKinney, Josh Harris, Lucas Lee, Jacob Poel, and a slew of other well-known invaders from the Midwest are set to make their first trips to Tyler County’s 1/4-mile oval. Among the dozens of Modified racers in attendance will also be a visitor all the way from Chandler, AZ— Ricky Thornton Jr.—an IMCA and USMTS standout and a previous winner of the Race for Hope 74.

If that’s not enough, altogether more than 200 drivers are entered to compete in six divisions of racing.

4. The AMS points race is ready to heat back up.

The series standings have been stagnant since the Mega 100 was postponed from its original start date of June 1. However, don’t expect that to still be the case by the weekend’s end at Tyler County. Series points will be on the line as both the Let It Ride 55 and Mega 100 stream LIVE on FloRacing.

In the last AMS points race, Young drove his No. 10y car to a flag-to-flag victory in the $3,000-to-win finale at Fayette County Speedway on May 27 in Brownstown, IL. The win was Young’s second of the season, helping bring his points total to a series-leading 1,640 overall. Josh Harris sits in second, 185 points behind Young, and Rich Dawson is currently a distant third with 1,300 points.

Will Young continue to build his advantage over the field or will a challenger emerge among the rest of the top five?

3. Every race is an opportunity to make a statement—and win a huge payout.

The new-look Mega 100 entire weekend has a revamped schedule, and with it, plenty of opportunities to not only earn cross-promotion bragging rights but also a piece of a massive prize purse.

Prior to the $15,000-to-win Mega 100 on Saturday, the seventh annual Let It Ride 55 will hand out $3,055 to its winner on Friday, along with the highly prized “Slot Machine” trophy, which counts  Rick Aukland, Nick Hoffman, Tyler Nicely, Tanner Wilson, and Jesse Wisecarver among its past owners. The $555-to-win Dickson Racing Shocks “Non-Qualifiers Race” has also been added to Friday’s schedule.

2. The defending champ is taking on a loaded field, but he’s never looked stronger.

Taylor Cook scored the biggest win of his career at last year’s $10,000-to-win Mega 100, but it wasn’t the first—or last—time he’s tasted success at Tyler County Speedway. In 2016, the 23-year-old captured his breakthrough victory at the “The Bullring” by winning the Hillbilly 100. After a pair of victories last year, the Stanley, NC, native pushed his streak of dominance to four straight at the 1/4-mile by winning the Dickson Classic in late May. Can he make it five in a row? Tune in Saturday as Cook turns his attention to Tyler County’s biggest prize to date: the $15,000-to-win Mega 100 on Saturday.

1. One way or another, America’s Baddest Bullring is in store for a history-making weekend.

The UMP Modifieds and AMS are joining up with the Renegades of Dirt for the first time at this event, creating a can’t-miss lineup of established stars and talented up-and-comers. The cross-series collaboration means some drivers will have to adjust to a no-spoiler car setup—also a first for the speedway—which will unhook their race cars slightly from the surface. All of this creates an environment ripe to produce the action-packed, side-to-side racing that’s made Tyler County Speedway famous over the years.

Will the Mega 100 see its first repeat winner or will a new face emerge to take Saturday’s record-breaking payout?
