World RX Of Norway: Kristoffersson Becomes 2nd Driver To Earn Clean Sweep

Johan Kristoffersson continues to add his name to the FIA World Rallycross Championship record books, this time completing just the second-ever clean sweep in series history on Sunday in Hell, Norway.

The PSRX Volkswagen Sweden driver and 2018 points leader entered round five of the season as the defending race winner at the Lånkebanen Circuit and now joins Andreas Bakkerud—who went unbeaten in Hell in 2016—as the only drivers in 54 World RX events to win all four qualifiers, a semifinal, and the final in the same weekend.

“I felt very comfortable coming into the weekend to be honest and the car is really underneath me and I can do exactly what I want with the car and I can position it in the right place every corner, every lap in every condition and that’s what it takes to be really quick in rallycross   “

On Sunday, Kristoffersson stayed clear of trouble in the final to pull away for a wire-to-wire triumph, his fourth overall win of the year.

Moments after the race start, Bakkerud and Timmy Hansen were brought to a standstill after making contact heading into Turn 1. As Kristoffersson’s teammate Petter Solberg slowed down to navigate his way around the carnage, Mattias Ekstrom and Kevin Hansen chose to take their Jokers—all of which allowed Kristoffersson to speed off unscathed and build an early advantage.

“I followed my plan going to the normal lap straight away, but in front of me was completely chaos,” Solberg said. “I don’t know what happened… So when I came into the corner I thought I would hit them because they were everywhere.”

Four laps later, the gap between Kristoffersson and the pack had grown to more than four seconds before he finally took his Joker on his final trip around the circuit. Meanwhile, the battle for the remaining podium spots was much closer, as Ekstrom passed on Solberg on Lap 5 to clinch a season-best second-place finish.

Ekstrom narrowly avoided disaster earlier in the day by earning a 20-point DNF instead of a scoreless DNS when his Audi S1 EKS RX Quattro suffered technical issues at the start line in Qualifier 4. After eking out a spot in Semifinal 1, he rebounded to finish second behind Timmy Hansen and earn a finals berth.

“I had a couple of mistakes because I was (going) 100 percent,” Ekstrom said. “I managed to beat Petter at least. Johan [was] the dominant (one), so big congrats to him. But I’m happy with a podium after such a day.”

Kevin Hansen and Timmy Hansen crossed in fourth and fifth, respectively, and Andreas Bakkerud placed sixth.

Notably absent from the final was Belgium round winner Sebastien Loeb, who saw his four-race streak on the podium come to an end after finishing fourth in Semifinal 1.

With the victory, Kristoffersson now leads the overall standings by a whopping 31 points. Loeb remains in second place with 104 points, ahead of Solberg (102), Bakkerud (101), and Ekstrom (97).

The double podium finish by Kristoffersson and Solberg also helped PSRX Volkswagen Sweden extend its advantage in the team race to 39 points. Team Peugeot Total (T. Hansen, Loeb) rise to second place with an identical 198 points to third-place EKS Audi Sport on count-back.

The World RX Championship returns on June 30-31 for Round 6 at the Holjes Motorstadion Circuit in Sweden, an event where Kristoffersson is—once again—the defending champion.

After beating his rival Norwegian drivers on their home soil, Kristoffersson now looks to defend his native track.

“If I could win in France or Canada or wherever, I will take it,” he said. “For sure, it’s always special to win on home ground and that’s Sweden for me. … The most important (thing) for me is the 30 points and we keep going from here.”
