Johan Kristofferson is the early points leader after a dramatic, controversial victory at World RX of Barcelona to open the season. In case you missed it, Kristofferson placed second in the final but was awarded the victory after Mattias Ekstrom was disqualified for his lap-one collision with Petter Solberg.
Kristofferson’s first World RX victory actually came at Montalegre in 2015. In spite of what has already proven to be a deep and talented field of rival drivers, he says he’ll be ready to compete for another win this weekend.
“I am really happy to open my 2018 campaign with a victory, but I am now fully focused on round two in Portugal,” he said. “The competition is stronger than ever, so I am sure my rivals are coming to Montalegre even more determined to get on top of the podium.”

Last year, Ekstrom earned the victory at World RX of Portugal ahead of Sebastian Loeb and Kristofferson. Solberg, whose weekend took an abrupt turn when he was forced into the barriers by Ekstrom in Barcelona, has won twice at Montalegre in his career.
“We come to Portugal on the back of a thrilling season opener in Catalunya-Barcelona, which proved to be as close and exciting across the board as we expected,” said World RX Managing Director for IMG Paul Bellamy. “It is a trend that we have no doubt will continue this weekend and well into the season.”
Montalegre is among the most popular courses on the World RX calendar, with a challenging layout set before the spectacular hills of the Vila Real. The setting, coupled with sellout crowds, makes this event a must-see.
