Matt Egel Flies To The Avolon Win, Keeps Australia Perfect
Matt Egel led flag-to-flag at Avalon Raceway to keep a perfect streak of Australian wins in the World Series of Sprintcars.
In the fourth round of the World Series of Sprintcars, Kerry Madsen and James McFadden stayed relevant with podium finishes but this time they missed the win as Matt Egel climbed to the top of the stairs at Avalon Raceway in Victoria, Australia.
Egel captured the pole and led flag-to-flag, which was a major turnabout since he suffered in time trials and barely made the shootout.
On lap 11, Egel briefly lost the lead. McFadden stole second from Madsen in turn one and used his momentum to pass Egel on the backstretch. But that lasted for less than a complete lap when Brock Hallett lost control and spun in turn three. Egel and Madsen were returned to the front row as the leaders of the last completed lap.
The race ran without a second caution until Shaun Dobson and Brayden Parr spun with three laps remaining. On the final restart, Madsen has a head of steam but could not make the pass on a flawless Egel.
“This is huge for me and the Downing Brothers,” Egel said. “They work so hard and I just had to make sure I didn’t make a mistake because I knew that Kerry and James would jump on it straight away.”
Madsen congratulated Egel on his run saying he was a great driver who ran without mistakes.
“He’s a great driver and if he even slipped up once, I was going to the stick it in there,” Madsen said, “but he was too smooth tonight and I’m really rapt for the Downing Brothers, because they work so hard and this win is fully deserved.”
Steve Lines and Jamie Veal completed the top five.
American Dominic Scelzi had his best run of the series finishing 11th. Jason Johnson struggled after winning his heats. He fell back to 14th in the B-main and missed the show.
