The 2017 season saw the debut of FloRacing.com and our experts tracked more than 500 national touring series races. Since this one-of-a-kind race site covers multiple disciplines of dirt track racing, it seems only fitting to compare the drivers from one style of competition to another—but as with many great ideas, that is easier said than done.

The countdown of the 50 greatest drivers starts now—but first we need to describe the methodology for ranking the drivers.

This year, the list of series that contributed to the rankings included the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, All Star Circuit of Champions, USAC Sprints, and American Sprint Car Series national tour representing the Sprint Cars, as well as the Pennsylvania Speedweeks.

The World of Outlaws Late Model Series, Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, UMP DirtCar Special Events, and some of the major Late Model races from the regional series make up the rankings for the Late Model drivers.

Modifieds are represented by the Super Dirt Series Modifieds and the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS), while Midgets come from the stars of USAC.

Since each of these series has varying field sizes, we settled on a ranking system that employs “Percentage Points.” With the baseline belief that a win is a win in these major series, 100 points is awarded to first and the points decrement below that as a percentage of the field. For example, in a 25-car field, each position behind the winner is worth four fewer points.

In races with incredibly large fields, the points decrement to a less extreme degree. A 50-car field decrements two points per position and drivers earn points even if they fail to make the A-Main.

To be included in this list, a driver had to run 10 or more races in the national tours that were included. This was done to insure that a driver had enough laps under their belt for us to accurately handicap their performance.

We will count down through the winter months with our champion crowned in late January prior to the start of Sprint and Late Model Winter Nationals from East Bay Raceway—races that can be streamed LIVE on FloRacing to kick off a second great season of dirt coverage.
