Mike Mahaney Is Perfect In Night One Of The Super DIRTcar World Finals
Mike Mahaney swept night one of the Super DIRTcar portion of the Textron Off Road World Finals with a pair of fast times and heat wins.
Mike Mahaney was perfect Thursday night in the unique qualification format for the Textron Off Road World Finals' Super DIRTcar division at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, NC.
He set fast time in both qualification flights and used superior track position to win both heat races. Friday and Saturday nights showcase multiple features for the World of Outlaws' three top divisions, so preliminaries need to get out of the way early. That means the time trials and heat races for Super DIRTcar were held on Thursday instead of the day of the respective races.
Mahaney jumped to an early lead from the pole in the Friday heat and never looked back. The other heat winners for Friday’s portion of the show were Mat Williamson, Matt Sheppard, Keith Flach, and Demetrios Drellos.
In the heat races for Saturday night, Mahaney picked up where he left off and won again. Drellos, Sheppard, and Flach also swept both heats with Tim Fuller winning the fifth race.
The heat winners will lock into their respective A-Mains while the remainder of the 48-car field competes in a series of qualification races.
"It couldn't be any better that's for sure," Mahaney said. "We've come down here [in the past] and kind of struggled. ... We timed first in both sessions and won the heat races; that will set us up great for the weekend. Couldn't be prouder of our Buzz Chew Racing Team. We've just been doing everything perfect."
In the points battle, Billy Decker did his best to stay in contact with the leader Sheppard. Decker's second-place finishes in both heats did not lock him into the A-Mains, but they did provide a good baseline from which to work this weekend.
"We want to run good; that's the bottom line for us," Decker said. "Yeah, we're points racing but we're also trying to put ourselves into position to win, and I don't think we've done that yet but we're digging and clawing. We're off a little bit this year and not as sound as we need to be — I don't know why; it's got me confused but we aren't quitting."
Sheppard has only one thing on his mind — and if he can accomplish it, he will earn maximum points.
"We're just down here to trying to win," Sheppard said. "Last year we got a little taste of not having point pressure and we just let it all hang out and we were good all weekend. That was a lot more fun so we're not going to go out there and run the crap out of it and see if we can win some races."
