Veteran driver Scott Bloomquist came face-to-face with an old foe on Saturday night: Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS. This time, he vanquished it in a dominant performance to win the 100-lap Super Late Model race at the 23rd Fall Classic.

Bloomquist’s victory comes one year after he lost the lead in the same event with only one lap to go. On Saturday, Bloomquist would not let history repeat itself as he passed Dennis Erb Jr. for the lead on lap four and held on to lead the remaining 97 laps of the race.

Bloomquist was not gifted a caution-free night. He had to withstand eight cautions overall, each time pulling to the lead without giving the lead for a single lap.

After starting 16th, Brandon Overton leapfrogged his way past 14 cars to claim both the Hard Charger award and second place. Overton was up to second by lap 56 and was the only driver that had the chance to foil Bloomquist’s night during the long runs. After leading early, Erb Jr. faded — falling outside of the top five for a while before bouncing back to complete the podium.

The race was red-flagged after an altercation on the restart of the seventh caution. Cade Dillard and Jack Sullivan wrecked and after the race got into a fight when Sullivan used his late model to express his displeasure with Dillard. As the cars started to roll on the restart, Sullivan turned his car around and aimed it at Dillard, putting his nose under the body and flipping Dillard’s Late Model onto its top.

Overton’s best chance at the lead came around the three-quarter mark when Bloomquist’s momentum was stalled by lapped traffic. That gave Overton an opening. He took to the top of the racing surface to sail by Bloomquist, and as he was completing the pass, disaster struck in front of the leaders. Tyler Erb and Tanner Kellick collided to bring out the caution, negating Overton’s pass and nearly collecting Bloomquist.

Bloomquist was successful on the restart over Overton and Erb.

Chris Simpson and Morgan Bagley completed the top five.
