Brett Hamm Gets 1st Ultimate Win
Brett Hamm became the 16th different winner in 19 Ultimate Southeast races with a flag to flag romp at Modoc Speedway.
After breaking a drive shaft while leading a race at Modoc (SC) Speedway in April, Brett Hamm had his sights set on redemption on Saturday night.
In his return trip to the track, Hamm held off a late-race charge by Ross Bailes to score his first career Ultimate Southeast victory.
In doing so, Hamm became the 16th unique winner in 19 series races this year, continuing an incredible record with one event remaining for the Southeast tour. This was Hamm’s first win in a touring series since taking the top spot in a Carolina Clash race at Modoc in May 2016, although he came close on one other occasion this year. Hamm finished second in May at Carolina Speedway in Gastonia, NC.
Bailes’ runner-up finish was not a big surprise. This was the fourth time in his last five Ultimate races that he finished second. In that same span of time, he won the Brookshire Memorial at Laurens (SC) County Speedway.
Brent Dixon rounded out the podium after starting fifth. His third-place finish improved on his most recent Ultimate attempt at Modoc this spring when he finished fourth.
The other significant battle taking place during the race was between points leader Tyler Millwood and second-place Jason Welshan. Millwood extended his advantage by finishing fourth to Welshan’s eighth.
While Welshan gave up ground in the championship chase, he was one of two drivers who gained the distinction of being Hard Chargers. Advancing seven positions, he matched Shane Clanton who also climbed that many spots to finish sixth.
