On-track preparations ahead of next month's Indy 500 are officially underway as 34 drivers took to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Wednesday for the annual open test.

A trio of former Indy 500 champions paced the field in overall speed: Scott Dixon (2008), Josef Newgarden (2023, '24), and Takuma Sato (2017, '20) all recorded fast laps at 225.182 mph, 225.125 mph, and 225.069 mph, respectively.

It was a productive day for Kyle Larson as he posted the 11th-fastest overall lap of 223.540 mph and sixth-fastest non-tow lap (laps without drafting assistance). He was also the fastest Arrow McLaren car, the second-fastest Chevy to Newgarden — the two-time reigning champ — and his 102 laps logged were seventh-most.

Among those who didn't have the smoothest day: Graham Rahal narrowly avoided catastrophe when he grazed the wall in the north short chute, Jack Harvey dealt with a hybrid system issue, Santino Ferrucci’s engine failed and Rinus VeeKay experienced technical glitches. Rookies Nolan Siegel, Callum Ilott and Jacob Abel struggled, posting 31st-, 32nd- and 34th-fastest times.

Rosenqvist, Palou and Sato were the top-three in no-tow times. Next up is Thursday’s high-boost session designed to simulate Fast Friday qualifying conditions.
