The 2024 Pennsylvania Sprint Car Speedweek title race will likely come down to Danny Dietrich or Anthony Macri.

Danny Dietrich and Anthony Macri have set such a high standard this Pennsylvania Speedweek that the two winningest drivers in Sprint Car racing might not let any other competitor win a miniseries feature.

That’s a bold proposition, but with two rounds down and seven races to go, Dietrich and Macri have separated themselves from the rest, particularly their nine wins this year both being tied with David Gravel for most nationally.

“It’s about as good as it gets,” said Dietrich after his second straight win to start PA Speedweek, opening up for him a 101-point miniseries lead. “I don’t know it gets any better. We’ve won some big races here lately. Ninth win, we’re ahead of schedule in a sense compared to any other year. We’ve won way more than we’ve had (at this point) than any other year. We’re going to keep on clicking.”

After Dietrich and Macri’s one-two finish Sunday at BAPS Motor Speedway the question looms: Can anyone contend with Dietrich or Macri for the title even if they don’t sweep the remaining races?

Macri, who’s 165 points out of the lead after Friday’s mistake in which he wrecked out of the lead at Williams Grove Speedway, has the goods to overcome the margin but even he himself might not even catch Dietrich at the rate he’s going.

“I feel like he’s firing on all cylinders. … They can put a complete night together just like we can put a complete night together,” Macri said. “At the end of the day, I feel like it kind of comes down to me and Danny. It comes down to whoever makes the least amount of mistakes, and whoever drives smarter and harder. It’s going to be a fun rest of the week.”

The aftermath of Friday’s mistake at Williams Grove where Macri overstepped the cushion in turn three while leading over Dietrich with four laps remaining cost him 145 points: 120 points between the five points he received for finishing 20th and the would-be 125 for a victory, plus the extra 20 points that Dietrich gained from triumphing instead of the 100 for runner-up.

Macri had the chance to make up 45 points on Sunday at BAPS as he stayed within a second of Dietrich for the final 18 laps of the $10,000-to-win feature, but a door never fully opened for him to attempt a pass for the win. In other words, Macri respects his relationship too much with Dietrich to force the issue, even if he has considerable ground to make up in the title race.

“Yeah we wanted to win, but I didn’t want to put us in that position that would cost us and him the race,” Macri said. “I feel like we’re pretty good buddies off the track, but we both know this is how we make money. We’re kind of not friends on the racetrack, if that makes sense. We race each other hard. We’ve had our run-ins where he’s hit me or I hit him.

“At the end of the day, we’re just trying to win. I have respect for Danny and he has respect for me. It might be close and we might race each other really hard, but we both have that respect.”

Dietrich reciprocates that same attitude toward Macri and even brought the subject up in his victory lane interview.

“We have respect for each other,” Dietrich later added. “I’m sure there are a couple other cars in this pit area that we probably would’ve wedged it under and moved out of the way for a win. Both of us. That’s the respect level for me and him. We both race each other with a lot of respect and courtesy.

“A night like (Sunday), the last thing he wants to do is wreck and the last thing I want to do is wreck. But yeah, there’s other drivers in the pit area that sure in hell wouldn’t do that. And we probably wouldn’t do that either.”

Dietrich felt like he “maybe for a lap or two slipped up and left the door open” for Macri to make a move, “but other than that” he didn’t feel like Sunday’s win had ever been in jeopardy.

“We have a pretty good base,” Dietrich said. “Honestly I feel like we’re making all the right adjustments and I feel like I’m racing really smart right now, which is a huge plus. A lot of times when you’re not racing the best, you’re making mistakes and that’s when Anthony can drive by and win the race.”

Both Dietrich and Macri are racing with renewed confidence, too. Last year, Dietrich won seven times while Macri won eight races, but Macri didn’t win a race after July 4 during time away from his family team. The last time Dietrich won nine races this early in the summer was 2018 when his ninth win came June 15 during an eventual 15-win campaign.

Macri, meanwhile, has had hotter starts. When he led the nation in Sprint Car wins in 2022, he won his ninth feature on May 28. But regardless, the two drivers are racing at their best, which should create a fun finish to the PA Speedweek title.

“We’re back again. He’s back,” Dietrich said. “Oh yeah, we’re feeling good. We’re having fun.”
