It's Kyle Larson vs. Rico Abreu For The High Limit Sprint Car Series Title

Don't virtually crown Kyle Larson as the inaugural High Limit Sprint Car Series champion just yet. Rico Abreu has closed the gap of late.

Countless onlookers of the High Limit Sprint Car Series thought the tour’s points race would be a foregone conclusion, that nobody would be a match for Kyle Larson in the inaugural 12-race season.

Well, with two touring races left, Rico Abreu has thrown a wrench into that prediction. Twenty points separate Larson and Abreu, two of the sport’s more beloved and popular drivers, as things could get interesting Tuesday at Bridgeport Motorsports Park, especially if Abreu continues to chip away at the narrowing margin.

“Two races left, Kyle versus Rico,” series co-promoter Brad Sweet said. “And Rico is running really well. Yeah, it’s going to be fun to watch. For me, I get to put the headset back on over there. Hopefully the fans come out and we have a turnout of cars. That track is very capable of putting on some great racing. Hopefully we’ll have a great end to our season.”

Abreu is close enough to Larson that he can mathematically take the series lead heading into the tour’s finale next Tuesday, Oct. 10 at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind. Series points are awarded as follows: 100-95-92-90-88-86-82-82-80 with a one-point reduction from 10th (80 points) down to 24th (65 points).

The St. Helena, Calif., driver in the midst of his best season ever has six straight podium finishes now with the High Limit Series after the ninth-to-second run last Tuesday at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. That spans back to May 31’s runner-up finish at Tri-City Speedway outside St. Louis.

On the whole, Abreu has 11 wins on the season, a number one win away from doubling his victory total from last year.

“I have an amazing team this year,” Abreu said. “We’ve really worked hard together to just excel our program and execute, and circumstances like (Lernerville).”

Abreu said he’s not overly concerned about winning the championship and that “I’m just coming to win the races.” While the champion banks $30,000 in purse money, runner-up is in line for a nice payday as well at $20,000.

“It’s fun. I don’t really track these points or anything like this,” Abreu said. “I just want to come in and win these races. I’m just really fortunate to be in this situation to race fast race cars right now.”

Larson’s led by as many as 49 points this season, which came after his June 6 victory at Eagle Raceway. Last Tuesday at Lernerville he squandered 18 points when he fell from the lead to finish eighth upon slipping off the cushion as leader in the closing laps.

But even if Abreu wins these last two races, Larson locks up the championship if he posts back-to-back podium finishes. Should the points be gridlocked at season's end, the tiebreaker would come down to feature wins (Larson has three while Abreu has two) followed by runner-up finishes (Abreu has three to Larson's two) and then third-place finishes (both have one).

“Hopefully it’ll be another good show (at Bridgeport),” Larson said. “It’s a great racetrack. Really exciting place. I’ve only got to run there once (since the reconfiguration). Sheldon and I had a good race. I got beat at the end. Not sure who all is going to be there yet, but I’m sure we’ll have people from Pennsylvania come on by and a lot of cars from Lernerville hopefully will come. It should be great car count and hopefully I can put together more solid laps than I did (at Lernerville) and get a little better finish.”
