Scott Bloomquist Starts At The Back; Ends Up At The Front
After coming up light at the scales, Scott Bloomquist made his way to the front and won his fifth Topless 100.
After losing the North/South 100 last weekend in an upset by Tim McCreadie, Scott Bloomquist acquired his fifth Comp Cams Topless 100 at Batesville (Arkansas) Motor Speedway.
Bloomquist is the first driver to get five wins in the Crown Jewel, breaking his tie with Billy Moyer. Last week one fan at Florence Speedway shouted out that it was time for Bloomquist to retire, winning the 40,000 feature this week was the most fitting answer to the peanut gallery heckle.
Bloomquist led the final 34 laps of the 100-circuit race. Before taking the lead he was running in second to Austin Rettig, who gave up the lead when he had to pit with a flat tire on lap 66. Rettig's lead was short-lived--only three laps--after passing the race dominator McCreadie.
"The car was awesome. Once we moved outside, I got by a bunch of cars. I had to take it easy on the tires. We were looking for somewhere around lap-40 to pit and it worked out for us," said Bloomquist.
Bloomquist took the long road to victory. After he topping Group B's Fast Time and winning his heat, he was 45 pounds light on the scales. The then four-time winner of the event had to try to make his way into the A through the B-Main. Bloomquist finished fifth in the second B, which wasn't enough to advance him into the show. He was forced to use a provisional position even to enter the A-main.
"I just kept watching those lead cars. They were starting to have trouble around lap-60." Bloomquist said, "I knew we had enough for them at the end. I just had to keep the car straight and smooth. The Andy Durham Racing Engine ran great. I can't thank everyone enough, especially all my help, the sponsors, and all the fans. I followed the 94 car [Rettig] through there, but he was burning the tires up. I would sweep wide on the straightaways and go low in the corners. That was the fastest groove. I wasn't worried about being passed at the end. I was just worried about tire wear to finish the race. I didn't push it nearly as much as I could have there at the end."
Rookie Greg Satterlee finished second after starting outside the top 10 in 11th.
"We had a really good car, "Satterlee said, "To get a top-five here, we are happy with that. We have been struggling lately, but made some good decisions on the car. We were tight after hot laps, and we wanted the car to drive as freely as possible, to save the tires. I could make the middle of the race track work, and we got all the way to second, but Scott was good. I thought I could roll him on the outside. There was a fine line out there. Congrats to him on the win. The Rocket Chassis was really good today and the Andy Durham Racing Engine ran flawless."
Dennis Erb Jr. took the final podium finish from his 13th starting position in a race during which a lot of fast front running cars had late-race problems. The top four finishers all started from outside the top-10. Rettig finished seventh after starting 21st.
"We had a good car today. A lot of guys had troubles today. We had planned to pit there sometime early if there was a caution the way the track looked. We needed to have some fresh tires to get to the second half of the race. I want to thank Black Diamond Chassis, Ideal Ready Mix, M&S Concrete, McBride Mack, and Vomac Truck Sales. I want to give a shout out to my main sponsor, Johnny McBride, today is his birthday."
David Breazeale finished fourth after starting 19th and Tim McCreadie had to settle for the last spot in the top-five after winning the pole and being the car to beat for the majority of the race.
