Kyle Larson's Perfection Gives Him The FloRacing Power Rankings Lead
In the past two weeks, Kyle Larson had a week drivers dream about with three wins and a second-place finish in major league sprint car racing.
Last week, Kyle Larson had one of those hot streaks drivers dream about. On June 13, we won a World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race at Eagle (NE) Raceway on the heels of a second-place finish at Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway. He went to Michigan International Speedway the next weekend, set the pole winning speed, won the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race, and then headed straight to Ohio where he won back-to-back events in the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions on June 19-20.
No one is going to argue about his No. 1 ranking in the FloRacing Sprint Car Series Power Rankings.
The only reason to offer a disclaimer at all about his strength is because he started just four sprint car races in the past 60 days, but one need look only at the NASCAR numbers to assuage any doubt about his skill behind the wheel of a race car. Drivers get 100 percentage points for each win and, depending on the field size, about 96-98 points for a second-place finish. Larson is going to sit atop the rankings until he races again. Everyone in the Outlaws or ASCoC ranks hopes that doesn't happen for quite some while so they don't have to beat him.
With the Outlaws now fully up to speed, they have run 20 races in the past 60 days and at least one thing has been constant: Brad Sweet has been in the top 10 in every event he's entered. Better still, 18 of those races were top fives, including back-to-back victories at Jackson (MN) Speedway and Knoxville (IA) Raceway in early June. He advanced one spot in the Sprint Car Power Rankings because he was more consistent than Donny Schatz.
Schatz has been extremely strong on occasion with six wins in the past 60 days, which brings his total for the year up to 12. When a driver like Sweet develops the consistency he's shown in the past two months, it takes only minor mistake to hurt one's ranking, and Schatz has a couple of results outside the top 10 in recent events. He had a big bobble last week in the JB Memorial at Beaver Dam (WI) Raceway and finished 19th.
David Gravel was the big loser from last week's top five. The reason for his drop was not nearly as dramatic as Schatz's. Gravel finished 10th at West Liberty (IA) Raceway and was ninth at Beaver Dam. Those results coupled with the fact that a win at Plymouth (IN) Speedway aged out of the Power Rankings formula caused him to slide.
As a result, ASCoC and occasional Outlaw star Kerry Madsen climbed to fourth with Chad Kemenah rounding out the top five.
2. Brad Sweet, 90.73
3. Donny Schatz, 89.91
4. Kerry Madsen, 88.36
5. Chad Kemenah, 88.36
6. DJ Foos, 88.25
7. David Gravel, 85.50
8. Carson Macedo, 83.00
9. Ryan Smith, 82.50
10. Shane Stewart, 82.32
