Jason Johnson Surges In The FloRacing Sprint Power Rankings With 3 Top 5s
David Gravel earned more top-10s in the 60-day period that defined this week Sprint Power Rankings and that has made a huge difference.
This week's big mover in the top 10 of the FloRacing Sprint Car Series Power Rankings was Jason Johnson. From May 12-14, he added three consecutive top fives to his credit at Eldora and Tri-State, which doubled his productivity in the past 60 days. Johnson also has his Devil's Bowl win to help boost his average. In his last 10 efforts, the only thing that has hurt him was an 18th-place finish in the Bob Newton Classic at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN.
David Gravel has shown an exceptional blend of strength and consistency during 60-day period that ended with the latest FloRacing Sprint Car Series Power Rankings script. In his last 15 World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series starts, he has earned 13 top 10s -- one more than his principle rival Donny Schatz. That gives him the No. 1 position.
The Outlaw Gravel also closed the gap on Schatz in terms of victories by winning four times compared to Schatz's three. Gravel has not been perfect with a 14th-place finishes in mid-April at Devil's Bowl in Mesquite, Texas, and again at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, last week. Notably, both of these stumbles came in two-day shows on the same track.
Second-place Schatz got off to such a great start to the season with six wins to his credit before mid-March. By setting the bar so high, even failures to score in the top five were disappointing. Devil's Bowl proved particularly challenging, but Schatz got back on target and scored three wins during a five-race, top five streak. Just when it seemed like all of his problems lay behind him, he fell outside the top 10 again at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, IL. He earned only 71 percentage points out of 100 in a field of 34 entrants, and that has him languishing behind Gravel by a fairly significant margin.
Brad Sweet has been much stronger in the past 60 days than his ranking of third suggests. Bad races at Kings Auto Speedway in Hanford, CA, and Gator Motorplex in Willis, Texas, keep his average down, but the remainder of his finishes have been seventh or better. Sweet pocketed a pair of top fives at Eldora, and that is a big part of the reason he jumped three positions in the standings. If he can keep his consistency for just a while longer, the 26th-place finish at Kings will age out of his power ranking.
The top three positions all belong to the World of Outlaws drivers despite the fact that they have many more chances to stumble with a longer schedule.
The American Sprint Car Series finally got back into action after an almost month-long hiatus. They attempted to run a few races, but rain interfered.
When they got back on track, the rankings shifted. Johnny Herrera spent one week at the top of the charts, but a 10th-place finish at Lakeside Speedway dropped him down the standing this week. A 13th at Devils Bowl in mid-April are not doing him any favors either, but prior to his most recent effort a pair of top-fives buoyed him. Herrera is fourth in the standings.
Sam Hafertepe failed to win an ASCS race for the first time this year at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS, but he held onto his fifth-place in the rankings with a second-place finish. Aaron Reutzel -- who jumped from 20th to 13th in the sprint standings this week -- led all but one lap in the McCarthy Auto Group KC Klassic. It is notable that Hafertepe paced the field for that remaining lap.
