Nine-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour winner Tim Connolly, recently sidelined from driving following his third spinal surgery after a demanding career in racing and football, is proud to announce that veteran NASCAR Cup Series star and 2008 Daytona 500 champion Ryan Newman will drive the iconic Mystic Missile Modified in the May 18 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, representing Tim Connolly and First General Services and other great supporters.
This special entry is backed by First General of Southern New York, uniting two veterans of motorsports for a high-profile collaboration at one of the most historic tracks in American racing.
The Mystic Missile name carries deep heritage, originally made famous by legendary car owner Bob Garbarino, who fielded some of the most respected cars in Modified racing history. Out of respect for Garbarino’s legacy, Connolly personally reached out to discuss the upcoming event-and was met with full support.
“Bob was thrilled with the idea, and that meant a lot to me,” said Connolly. “The Mystic Missile has always stood for excellence, class, and fierce competition. Ryan fits that ‘mold.’ He’s a racer’s racer, smart, tough, and incredibly experienced.”
Newman, who has made select appearances with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour over the years, and competes full-time on the SMART Modified Tour currently, is enthusiastic about the opportunity.
“I’ve always loved driving these cars,” said Newman. “To do it at North Wilkesboro, in a car with this kind of legacy and with the support of great partners, is something I’m really looking forward to.”
The car will feature branding from IGA Marketplace, Finley Properties, The Ragg Company, Fairvalue Hometown Grocery Store, Mathis Equipment, Northwest Automotive, and First Sanitation Services.
The team will campaign a Fury chassis powered by Yates Racing Engines, dressed in a bold yellow and black livery carrying the traditional v4 and Mystic Missile aesthetic.
The event will be broadcast live on FloRacing on Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. ET. Fans are encouraged to tune in and follow the team’s social media for updates throughout the weekend.
