Brown Claims His 37th Knoxville Win With the 410 Sprint Capitani Classic
Brian Brown earned the first 410 sprint win of the week in the Capitani Classic warm-up for the Knoxville 410 Nationals.
Brian Brown won the sixth annual Capitani Classic in the first 410 show of the 10-day Knoxville Nationals on Sunday. This was Brown's 37th win in a 410 at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway.
The 25-lap feature started with Kerry Madsen on the pole and Greg Hodnett on his outside. Madsen won the pole by winning all three of his of his Pole Shuffles.
Hodnett took the lead on lap one, pushing Madsen back to second. Brown started in the fifth position with Joey Saldana and Brad Sweet starting the race between him and the leaders. After passing Saldana and Sweet on lap three, Brown battled with Madsen for second before the first caution waved for Lynton Jeffrey slowing on the track.
With Hodnett's lead reined in by the yellow, Brown aggressively went after the position, running high on the cushion as Hodnett claimed the low groove.
The first lead change of the night happened on lap four as Brown found his way by Hodnett on the high side. However, Brown's time at the front was short-lived as Hodnett swept around him again on lap six.
About the same time a new car entered the top five battle, piloted by Austin McCarl, who started 10th and was now up to fourth.
As Hodnett first encountered lapped traffic, Brown had his next opportunity to reclaim the lead on lap 11. Hodnett fell out of the first two positions for the first time of the night when Madsen passed him on lap 15.
As Brown was working through traffic and extending his lead, the final caution of the race occurred when Spencer Bayston, who tasted victory on Thursday as he was the Belleville Midget Nationals winner, blew his right rear. The race returned to green with two laps remaining.
Brown propelled himself off the restart to claim the green-white-checkers victory. Madsen came up just short in second, and Sweet landed on the podium in third. Hodnett had to settle for a fourth-place finish after leading early. McCarl finished fifth.
Ian Madsen, Saldana, Danny Dietrich, Kemenah, and Davey Heskin rounded out the top 10 with the hard-charger award going to Heskin. He climbed into the top 10 after starting 24th.
Brown was nothing but grateful for the win and made sure to thank those responsible for track prep for doing a phenomenal job. Brown also extended his admiration to Kerry Madsen and his team.
"My hat goes off to the (track preparers) Dunkin family," Brown said in Victory Lane. "There was an awesome bottom and an awesome top. They've knocked it out of the park the last few days. To win the Capitani Classic is up there on my list. Ralph was hard on me, and then would pat me on the back and tell me I did a good job when things went right. I didn't really know what my plan was on the start. We started eighth and they kind of left the top open for me, and away we went.
"Greg's a heck of a race car driver, and they've been running well all week long. Kerry… we know what we get with their team. We got lucky enough to beat them, and it's really special."
Madsen admitted to not having enough speed to run Brown down.
"We weren't good enough," Madsen said about his second-place run. "They were faster. I was doing all I could do to hang onto second. I just wasn't good enough to run the top, and I was running some weird lines. We were gaining on it. I'm not disappointed in second. I'm really proud. Brian was just a better car tonight."
Sweet and his team will study what they did Sunday night to try to have a better run as racing continues at Knoxville later this week.
"If I could have just clipped Kerry there, we might have had something," Sweet said. "We were running the bottom so well. Kerry was doing everything he could to protect. His car was just off a little. There are some tricks around Knoxville here, and he obviously has a lot of laps. He used every trick in the book to keep us behind him. That was something to learn. Tonight was test and tune, and we put together a nice solid night."
