Kyle Larson Wins First Outlaws Race Since 2013 At Eagle Raceway
In a tribute car to Bryan Clauson, Kyle Larson won his first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race since 2013.
Kyle Larson led just two laps -- including the most important one -- at Eagle (NE) Raceway on Tuesday and won his first World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series race since 2013. It came in a car honoring Bryan Clauson.
The win was an emotional one for Stenhouse Jr.-Wood Racing, the team that Clauson raced with before losing his life in a sprint car accident last August. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Matt Wood are the co-owners of the team, which was formed during the offseason.
Two weeks ago, Larson entered a second car for his self-owned team and had an incredible race with his primary driver, Shane Stewart, at Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway. Larson finished second. This week, he was in a second car for Stenhouse Jr.-Wood and had to beat Stewart again.
The battle was much the same. Larson and Stewart ran hard side by side for most of the race -- Larson coming from sixth on the grid and Stewart from fourth. As with Lawrenceburg, the two even banged wheels at one point late during the race.
Often drivers get to racing one another and let the field get away. On Tuesday night, the competition spurred both to greater speeds, and it was while battling that they got past Donny Schatz for second and third. The tandem was working on race leader Daryn Pittman on the final lap when Larson passed for the lead.
Pittman held on for second, and Stewart finished third.
"I can't believe I parked it here, it's pretty cool," Larson said from Victory Lane. "I think this is this team's first win, so happy to be a part of that."
This was not only Larson's first Outlaw win since 2013 but also his first victory so far outside of his native California.
"We are there [close to a win], unfortunately we just need to finish it out," Pittman said. "Second sucks. We haven't been in the position all year and here we were. [Kyle] ran a good race, and we just got beat."
Pittman had a reason to be disappointed. He led 23 of the 25 circuits before getting passed with two laps remaining.
Brad Sweet finished fourth, and Schatz rounded out the top five.
