Triple Threat Weekend Gives Chuck Knight Three Chances To Win
Chris Knight has been racing for 48 years, but he is still excited to be taking on the competition this weekend in the Super Stock Triple Threat Weekend.
Chuck Knight chuckled when asked for a brief overview of his racing career heading into the Super Stock Triple Threat Weekend, which begins on Friday at Tri-State Speedway in Pocola, OK. Brevity isn't the first thing that comes to mind to a 63-year-old who's been racing since he was a teenager.
"I started racing at the age of 15," Knight said. "My dad was a flag man, and my granddad was a racer. I've been in it all my life. At the age of 15, it was my time to drive the family car, and that's how I started."
At first, he didn't take racing too seriously. It was just something that he loved to do on the weekends. This attitude led him to win several local championships before he started touring with a sponsor in the late '80s and running a 30-weekend schedule out East with the NASCAR All Pro series.
A few of those championships came at Tri-State Speedway, where he will be returning tis weekend to battle it out with local boys and traveling crews alike. As they all line up for three consecutive nights of racing, each hopes to win the $3,000 purse for the victor that will be awarded each night.
"It's going to be a real exciting weekend," Knight said. "I've talked to several other drivers that travel with us on these other series, and they're pretty excited about it. I think we'll have a good car count, and it's just a good race format."
Since Knight is semi-retired and only racing about 12 times a year, this is only his second visit to the Pocola track this year.
"I grew up here. I've got two or three championship here -- although I just don't race as much as I used to so I'm behind the gun a little bit. But I'll have a practice day and I'll fall in there and I should get settled in on Thursday," he said.
The three-day event will give Knight a chance to reset night after night. This format also works well for the traveling teams that are less familiar with the track.
"If you draw bad, well, it makes for a bad night," Knight said. "Everyone is so fast and competitive. If you start deep in the field because you draw bad, your whole night can be wasted. Then, with the opportunity of it being a separate show the next day, you have another chance to draw better. I think it's not going to compare to a weekly show here. It's going to be much better."
