Jason Sides Is This Week's Big Mover In The FloRacing Sprint Car Power Rank
With a second-place finish at Plymouth Speedway last week, Jason Sides surged in the FloRacing Power Rankings.
With limited action because of rain persisting into May, the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series held only one race last week. The American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) did not race and will not race again until May 11 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, KS. That single race the Outlaws managed to get created some ripples in the FloSports Sprint Car Power Rankings.
Jason Sides' Power Average has been skewed by an extremely slow start to the season. Last week, he was 22nd on the chart. He cut that in half and landed 11th this week after finishing second at Plymouth. In his first eight Outlaws races, he scored only one top 10. He started turning his season around with a ninth at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, CA, in late March. Since then, he has been perfect in that regard and has a nine-race streak of top 10s.
Another pair of disappointing results from the Las Vegas Motor Speedway Dirt rack will age out of Sides' Power Rankings next week. He should easily land in the top 10.
The formula looks at the past 60 days so that drivers' recent strengths and weaknesses are reflected. One of the biggest changes this week is that Sam Hafertepe Jr. finally gets full credit for the perfect start he has had in the ASCS. Garnering 100 percentage points for each of his five victories, he is going to be difficult to dislodge from the top spot unless he crashes in Kansas next week.
No positions changed among the top eight drivers this week, but there was some subtle movement. With his victory at Plymouth Speedway in Plymouth, IN, David Gravel closed the gap on second-place Johnny Herrera by one point.
The 100 points Gravel earned for this victory also allowed him to extend his margin over fourth-place Donny Schatz. The two sprinters entered the week with only a 0.14-point gap between them. Despite finishing strong in Plymouth with a fourth, Schatz now trails by 1.86 points.
Justin Henderson rounds out the top five this week with a perfect record of four top 10s in four ASCS races.
With a third at Plymouth, Aaron Reutzel also surged. He was 34th on the grid last week. Like Sides, he cut that in half and is currently ranked 17th. He has been splitting his time between the 410 Outlaws and 360 sprints in ASCS competition, so his movement up or down the list is a little more difficult to predict.
2. Johnny Herrera, 89.20
3. David Gravel, 87.93
4. Donny Schatz, 86.07
5. Justin Henderson, 86.00
6. Brad Sweet, 83.29
7. Rico Abreu, 77.67
8. Matt Covington, 77.40
9. Ian Madsen, 75.10
10. Seth Bergman, 74.60
